Alexander the Great reunified greece, conquered the entire known world in less than one generation. If that does not contribute to society just because of the greatness of the acts and the mythology, there is more. He created a common system of currency for the entire kingdom. By unifying eastern areas he allowed for the rise of Rome. He placed high value on education, he himself was schooled by none other than Aristotle. To say that his battles were for only personal gain would be cynical at the least.

Wars are basically harmful for humanity, men are taken off lands and fields lie sallow, this forms the basis for famines. However some wars are fought with the purpose of establishing some new order or ideology in the world, some are fought to expel occupiers, some are fought in revenge against transgressors, such wars may be said to have contributed something to the world. The wars Alexander fought were none of these, they were fought merely to extend his empire. So he cannot be said to have contributed anything.
