Haute Route Condition

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Mountaineering : One Thread

Am planning on doing the Classic High Level Haute Route next week. I had heard that because so much snow has melted that many parties and all guided parties were taking taxis around some sections. If you know which sections these are or have any advice on how the hot weather this summer has affected the route I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

Thank you very much Thomas Sweeney

Which way are you planning on going? The col de Chardonay, the Plateau de Couloir above Valsorey, and the Serpentine above Dix will all probably require cramponing over hard ice. Avoid the first by going over the Trient glacier from the Albert Premiere Hut, the second by going to the Chanrion Hut from Mauvoisin, and the third by going up the Ottema glacier to the Vignette Hut. The descent to Zermatt will certainly be very crevassed.

All the best, Hans
