Was Alexander the Great a popular ruler amoung his people?

If you consider the Macedonians to be "his people", then yes, he was very popular. After all, he made Macedonia wealthy with Persian gold and gave them the glory of conquering a huge chunk of the world at very little cost to them in terms of lives lost.

If you factor in the millions of people he conquered as "his people", then the picture gets a bit muddier. Alexander wanted to be popular with them, too, but when you march an army into someone's country and conquer it, you tend to get off on the wrong foot with the inhabitants. Their natural tendency is towards resentment. (As GW Bush has recently rediscovered in Iraq.)

He was the most popular king they ever had for he won their battles unlike their previous ruler Phillip. When he was ill and dying all his soldier who followed him up to India demanded to see him and he gave a sign of recognition to each of them as he was too weak to talk.
