pole line insulators

Does anyone know how the railroads disposed of or what happened to the many glass insulators that resulted when SCL and later CSX dismantled the many communication pole lines along their routes; also the many insulators that resulted from the removal by Western Union of their wayside telegraph lines of the 50's and 60's?

Some insulators were discarded in the area where they were removed and p[icked up by collectors, while others were salvaged and placed in the glass recycling program. A surprising number were just left on the cross arm when the wire was removed. They are still in evidence along some rights-of-way today.
