How Much to Charge For Converting VHS to VCD

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hello,

I have a customer who wants me to convert 2 different VHS tapes to VCDS. They are about 10 minutes each. Does anyone know how much money I ought to charge for this service.

A dollar a minute? This would not kill your customer for two 10 minute VCDs, but it might have the positive effect of discouraging them from using you for a bunch of longer jobs, assuming you don't want to do that. Please be aware that some DVD players will not play CD-R media. If you are going to burn yourself to CD-R you might want to see what model DVD player the customer has. http://www.vcdhelp.com has a DVD Player Compatiblity List that will warn you of any potential problems. Please also note that in the US, some Toshiba DVD players won't play VCD at all on any disc, not even commercial VCDs from Asia. I just wanted to warn you that you might do everything right and then have the customer complain about problems with the VCDs when the real problem is not with the VCDs but their DVD player. VCDs should be playable on any PC with the right playback software. Usually Windows Media Player is sufficient for playback, but I have heard of a few really screwed up systems that required the user to install a software DVD player to play VCDs.

You are so right about Toshiba. I wish I would have known about that issue earlier.
