Well, the man conquered about 90% of the world, and I think that entitles one to having "The Great" added to their name.

Also, I heard he was a pretty nice guy, for a conquerer. I think that can make someone pretty "great" too. ^-^

Very likely your teacher is not qualified to say. In order to test your teacher's qualifications, ask him (or her) to describe Alexander's breastplate and see what kind of an answer you get.
