Today, July 26, we members of the Catholic Church family honor, in a special way, the following friends of God -- saints whose souls are now in heaven:

Sts. Joachim and Ann (Israelite, parents of Mary, grandparents of Jesus, 1st century)
St. Bartholomea Capitanio (Italian, teacher, co-founded Sisters of Charity of Lovere, died at age 29 in 1836 [canonized 1950])
St. Erastus of Corinth (Greek, city treasurer [Romans 16], disciple of Sts. Paul and Timothy, bishop, martyred in 1st century)
Bl. George Swallowell and Bl. John Ingram (English, teacher and priest, tortured and martyred [drawn, hanged, quartered] by Elizabethans in 1594 [beatified 1929])
St. Hyacinth (martyred c. 110)
St. Parasceva (virgin, missionary teacher, tortured and martyred by beheading in 180)
St. Pastor (Roman, priest, c. 160)
St. Simeon of Padolirone (Armenian, hermit, monk in Italy, d. 1016)
Bl. Titus Brandsma [baptized Anno Sjoera] (Dutch, Carmelite priest, translator, philosopher, teacher, university president, opposed anti-Judaism, tortured in concentration camps, used in medical experiments, martyred [lethal injection at Dachau] by ex-Catholic Nazi nurse in 1942 [beatified 1985])
St. Valens (Italian, bishop, d. 531)
Bl. William Webster (English, priest, imprisoned 20 years, martyred in 1641 [beatified 1929])

If you have anything to share about these holy people, please reply now -- biographical episodes, prayers through their intercession, the fact that one is your patron saint -- whatever moves you. If you are interested in one of these saints and want to find out more about him/her, please ask. Information is sometimes available on the Internet.

All you holy men and women, saints of God, pray for us.
God bless you.
John
