We have Bat Guano !!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I am so excited. We have a colony of bats living in our barn. I thought it was so cool because of them eating mosquitoes and all, but we discovered lots of Bat Guano in piles under where they hang out (pun intended). I can't wait to add it to my garden. With all of the different animals around here, I think we have a new motto to go along with our new farm name. "Welcome Home " Farm, So much poop, So little time!

Ain't life grand? :)

Pretty cool to have bats. We have them in the area & you can see them at dusk, but none living on the property. Good thing they hunt on our property. Also, the nighthawks are back - I saw them Monday night. Any bug catchers are more than welcome!

Yes, we have a barn full of little brown bats. And barn swallows. The bug patrol!Just a word of caution, when you are shoveling up that bat guano, wear a dust mask to protect your lungs.

Lucky you!!

I've been wanting to make a bat house to lure them to my home, but never seem o have time. There aer some at work, that they want to get rid of. The irony - so close, yet still so far.

Yes, Lynelle, we will be adding it to our compost pile, but first we will use some of it to make a tea. I can't wait that long!! My father always told me, when in doubt, make a tea and put it on some weeds. Then you'll know within a day or two if it will burn your "good" plants. He and my dear mother have been gardening for over 50 yrs. They have been an inspiration and a wealth of information for us. Now, if we could figure out a way for the rain to go somewhere else so I can get some plants in the ground!!!!!

Rain, rain, go away...

When I was about 12 years old I remember my grandfather's anuial bat shoot at his place. He had a huge round barn and I remember when you looked up you could not even see the rafters for all the bats. He would have a bat shoot once a summer and so many were lost he would have to take them out of the barn in the bucket of the skiploader trackor. I don't remember how many buckets he would take out but it was alot. He did this after a few horse back riders in the area got a bat tangeled in there hair. He said He was scared of the rabies they carried. He would light a huge pile of dead bats on fire to get rid of them and boy did it stink. Now a days he could have made a money off the compost they made LOL Funny how times have changed. Oh I don't ever remember maskittoes when I was a kid. It was the north Sac. Valley in Calif. So the bats must really work good on them. Wish I could have that many bats at my place in Mo we get eatten up out here.
