Razor Burn.... Any way to stop it???

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I am wondering if anyone besides myself has a problem with Razor burn ??? (LADIES???) LOL My legs are always fine...I dont't have a problem with any burning.. and so are my under arms.. but when I shave anywhere on the (bikini area) I get razor burn so bad... It is very irritating and doesn't help with diff. kinds of shaving cream, or razors. Does ANYONE have any tips on how to stop, or reduce it??? Its rather embarassing but I figured if anyone would know.. this is the place to ask! Thanks in advance.

Dont shave! Why Buy into that "unclean unattractive" mentality of general society?

Use a beard trimmer ,and simply cut the hair short , rather than shorn.

Magic Shaving Cream, it is made for black males who are prone to razor burn on the facial area. I cant find it around here because there is not a large african american community, but I purchase it from drugstore.com. Very sinple, mix the powder with water apply, wait 5 min or so and rinse off. Less harsh then nair, no chemical odor or burning. And best of all, it is cheap!

Thanks. The Magic shaving cream sounds like something to try. Hopefully I can find it around here and stop this insanity. LOL But is it OK to use on the *bikini area*???

A local radio station was interviewing an "adult film" actress a few weeks ago. She said that Preparation H will take down the itchy red bumps after shaving the bikini area. I've not had the need to try it myself but I figure she should know. :)

2 easy things can help alot. Go slower with the razor, shaving too fast is what causes most razor burn. Shave more often and your skin will get conditioned to it.

I've seen that Magic Shaving powder, seems to be a popular item if you go the no-razor route. Just be careful applying it. Waxing is another option, seems like a lot of women choose that.

Or sugaring (cold washable wax) is an option. Have you also tried hair conditioner, or even shaving under water (in bath) or running water?

-- GT (nospam@nospam.com), May 07, 2002.

Hi. Yah I have tried both conditioner and I always am either in the bath or shower while shaving, so am always under water.I think I may have to try that Magic Shaving cream.

You could try this stuff called Calming Influence, it's made by Mary Kay and it's expensive but seems to last. My husband's face always burned after shaving and since he discovered this he's had no pain. Because of the price I would try other things first, but this is the only thing that has worked for him.

Have grown and shaved many beards over the years so know somewhat of tender skin.

Palmolive used to make what was called a brushless shave creme. It came in a tube similar to a toothpaste tube. It was super and always gave me a very close shave. I don't even know if it is still available as I just went to regular shaving foams instead.

The canned shaving gels are also pretty good. Get a good brand as there is a difference. I recommend Gillette.

You should also be able to shave by first covering the area with a heavy layer of lotion, not rubbed in, then shaving it off.

Good luck.

You might could do like me, grow a beard! I get razor burn very bad in the summer time and that is when I always grow a beard. People think I am crazy for growing a beard in the summer time but it isn't near as uncomfortable as razor burn. However I might try that Preperation H stuff on my face this summer!

Baby powder applied after shaving, then dusted off has always worked for the 8 daughters in my family.

try to hold your razor at an angle and shave side to side to begin with. The top to bottom and clean up with a botton to top. I can shave my underarms dry and never get razor burn. Also don't press down with the razor it should barly touch your skin. Jen

Sorry but I have to disagree with using Magic Shave. DH used to use it for years. That junk stinks to high heaven, is extremely toxic, and did I mention it stinks? (lol). It is also much stronger than Nair because it is meant for much coarser hair. It can cause burning on sensative skin and the bikini area is definitely sensitive. If you have to shave the bikini area, try soaking in a long hot bath first tosoften the folicles. Most likely you do not have razor burn but rather the makings of ingrown hair. As much as it sucks ....wax is the best way to avoid the ingrown hair syndrom. It hurts but its fast.

Use a new razor (every time)and then apply Bikini Zone, topical analgesic creme, right after. Don't put on underwear or pants until next day so do it at night or wear a dress, lol. You can reapply this stuff up to 4 times during the day. I got it at Walgreen's. It's made just for that (hence the name). The more often you shave, the better it will get. The main ingredient in it is Lidocaine 2%. It worked for me! Good luck.

Try exfoliating with a luffa sponge before shaving. That plus Dave's two tips is what helped rid me of razor burn (bikini area.).

When I was dancing and shaved sensitive areas frequently, I just used antibiotic ointment (generic Neosporin usually). Put it on after coming out of the shower. Worked like a charm. Be sure to avoid getting it "inside" as it could set off yeast infections.

-- Soni (thomkilroy@hotmail.com), May 08, 2002.

Go to the store (the big generic grocery stores are best) and buy the biggest, cheapest bottle (they come in gallon size plus here) of generic brand hair conditioner.

This stuff works like a charm -- moisturizes at the same time, and provides a "film" between YOU and the RAZOR -- which is what you want.

-- Tracy (trimmer31@hotmail.com), May 08, 2002.

My, Soni! Dancing? You go girl!

I am SO glad I'm not a woman. I sure appreciate all the work they do to look nice, though. Makeup, Hair, shaving "bikini area" (yikes!) waxing (double yikes!) Panty Hose.

Speaking of panty hose, ladies complain about how hard they are to get on...but guys could complain right back about how hard they are to get OFF!

Hi, When I was young (40 years ago), I could not shave without burning my face to the point that the Navy gave me permission NOT to shave,. I was complaing to my uncle about it and he gave me this advice, AND IT STILL WORKS,. He told me to rinse my face, after shaving, with the coldest water available, and then to let it dry without wiping with a towel. I did this and the burnt areas cleared up and since then I have always followed this method with TOTAL success. Good Luck. Wayne Roach

So, in summary, when you've you've got all lathered up and warm and slippery, you then stroke the razor over it softly, several times from several different directions, lathering copiously between each, then you pour ice-water over it. I imagine that would work, one way or another, but other than that words fail me - for which I think I'm thankful.

Wow Don, I never thought about shaving like that before! LOL
