Help us name our farm!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi everyone!

My DH and I have been trying to come up with a name for our farm. I know there are many of you out there with some wonderful ideas, so please share them with us. We have horses, llamas, goats, sheep, rabbit, turkey, dogs and cats. We take in animals that need a home and we garden on a small scale. The farm down the road is called "The Funny Farm", so that's not an option.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Hey Cindy, how about Shady Rest since you take in the homeless animals? :)

-- Margo (mcky2x@aol.com), May 06, 2002.

After finding so many useful things on the farm, like an old patch of asparagus, some old gate posts that had been burried for years, we decided to name our farm "Hidden Treasures Farm".

-- Pat (hiddentreasuresfarm@hotmail.com), May 06, 2002.

We named ours "Animal Farm." I don't suppose you can tell I was an English major who loved political science in college?

-- Julie in NC (jwoessner@rtmx.net), May 06, 2002.

My first place was named Limping Goose Farm, this came from my hunting dog getting one of my pet geese. Both were fine but the goode limped for awhile.

This place I have now is called Wind Fire Farm, this came from a grass fire that was a result of us burning an area for a garden when I first moved here. The wind picked up just as the fire was lit and took the fire off and over the hill. We had to call 911 and the DNR came with pumper trucks, backpacks, and a special forester who had to cut down two trees in the middle of the night. It was a very scary event but it is a good name for this palce.

Something will come to you so don't be in a hurry. Every place has its own personallity.

We have a place by us with this on their farm sign which I have always thought was pretty cute:

Oleo Acres "One of the cheaper spreads"

Maybe, given the variety of animals you have, something with "Menagerie" in it? Maybe because of the fact you take in unwanted animals you could incorporate the word "haven". . . Is there a way you could make a play on your last name in your farm name? (Your last name isn't MacDonald, is it?) : )

Is there a certain breed of animal you specialize in that you would want to emphasize in your farm name? Any geographical landmarks of note (river, valley, mountain, etc.)

Let us know what you come up with! -- Cheers, Renee M.

A little farm I passed some years ago was called, "It'll Do." Another favorite was, "Polack Hacienda." We rent, but my husband called this place, "El Rancho Terran." Good Luck!

-- Terran in VT (homefire@sover.net), May 06, 2002.

We named ours Shepherds Spring Farm. We have sheep and an old on farm spring, plus sheep lamb in the spring traditionally. Sounded sort of optimistic too as Spring was the season to start anew? Look around you and write down some things you like about the farm or are facts. Brainstorm a bit. Maybe a name will come out of the exorsize?

-- Ross (amulet@istar.ca), May 06, 2002.

If there are any types of trees that are abundant or you have a particular liking to then use that. I have known a few farms like Oak Hills Farm, and Willow Tree Farms. Sound really pretty and doesn't exclude any animaly you might have. Naming the farm for a unique event on the farm sounds like a really good idea too.

-- Erika (misserika129@hotmail.com), May 06, 2002.

Limping Goose Farm is such a cool name, Susan -love it!

I always thought Turkey Trot Farm would be a neat farm name, but it won't work for me. One of these days I'll think up a name for my place, I've been leaning towards Full Moon Farm.

-- shakeytails in KY (shakeytails@yahoo.com), May 06, 2002.

We went through the same thing a few years ago! Went through a thousand names and finally decided on the one that stuck! "The Five "T" Ranch" . Our last name starts with a T and there are five of us and we have a few cattle!!! It's not very creative but it suits us just fine!! Please let us know what you decide on! Love the Liming Goose!

-- Debbie T in N.C. (rdtyner@mindspring.com), May 06, 2002.

A couple I've seen in Maine are " bought and prayed for farm" along with " almosta farm".

Ours is located on a hill side with lots of neat erratics, some fairly large, so we named it Stony Knolls Farm.

Naming a farm is almost as exciting as naming a baby. A farm's name sets the first impression of what people will expect to see.

How 'bout

"DIRT POOR"

-- Woodsbilly n.c. Pa. (coleenl@penn.com), May 06, 2002.

I originally named our place "Green Acre" cause it was 1.2 total, then changed it to "Paid Off Parcel" and now since the divorce , I renamed it "The Singletree Homestead, "plowin' a two mule crop with a shetland pony"" :>)

-- Jay Blair in N. AL (jayblair678@yahoo.com), May 06, 2002.

Reads as if "Ark" should be in it somewhere.

-- Griff in OR (griff@hangnail.com), May 06, 2002.

Our's is called Harmony Farm although sometimes it is far from being harmonious......The name will come to you, but I agree "Ark" should be in there somewhere....How bout "Ark-full Acres".......

-- Harmony (harmonyfarm57@hotmail.com), May 06, 2002.

There's a farm near to me named "Tax Write Off Ranch".

-- Paul Martin (rpm44@centurytel.net), May 06, 2002.

Our place is named POSY PATCH because we have a large wildflower area that is right in front of our house. I liked the idea of menagerie that someone had, you could call your place MENAGERIE MANOR.

-- Jan Sears - Eastern Ontario (jcsears@magma.ca), May 06, 2002.

How about "Frolic Farm"?

-- Jay Blair in N. AL (jayblair678@yahoo.com), May 06, 2002.

We have 25 acs that is shaped like a horseshoe, very private with ridge lines on 3 sides and pasture in the middle. Since we have horses & numerous other critters & my husband does lots of stuff with old horseshoes we named our farm "Horseshoe Lane". Keep thinking.. Your farm name will come to you.

-- Nancy Lane in NC (faith@dnet.net), May 06, 2002.

We don't have much of a "real" farm. It's only a little over an acre but we've accumulated a variety of animals. We have a few laying hens and some ducks but they all have names and once they stop laying this will be their retirement home. We have four dairy breed goats who don't give us anything but entertainment and pleasure since they are wethers. We have a cat with a deformed paw, etc. I had thought of Misfit Farm but we also used a play on our name. We used part of our last name and there are four of us so we went with Four Winds Farm. I think everyone is right and that something will come to you. Good luck and let us know.

-- Jan (FourWindsFarm97@yahoo.com), May 06, 2002.

We named our all purpose farm 'Porky Pine Acres',.I had wanted to call it 'Porky Fine Acres'as we raised pigs at that time. The Dear wife's good sense won out,not to go with that .and we no longer have pigs, now ,but the name still fits good.

-- jess (jesswagler@hotmail.com), May 06, 2002.

Cindy, my husband was a long haul driver. When we got married He came in off the road.We bought our place and the first thing he said was its The dun runnin farm.So thats what we call it.Pam

-- Pam (pams65@hotmail.com), May 06, 2002.

You guys are so wonderful!! I love so many of the names and suggestions. We have a creek that runs by here named Apple Creek, and thought Apple Creek Farm sounded nice, but our old horse Stable was Lost Creek Stable, so we wanted something different. I thought "Noah's Warehouse" was kind of cute. And when we bought this place (gosh, almost 2 yrs ago) we loved, and still do, listening to the coyotes sing at night while we sat around the fire. Now our dogs, all 5 of them, sing back to the coyotes at night. (They are all fenced in AND neutered) :) So we thought maybe "Coyote Chorus Farm". But we just can't decide!

I really appreciate all the responses and will post our decision, if we ever make one! LOL

Keep 'em comin!

-- Cindy in IL (Ilovecajun@aol.com), May 06, 2002.

Tell us what it looks like there, Cindy.

-- Cindy in KY (solidrockranch@msn.com), May 06, 2002.

Well, you shot mine down before I even got to suggest it. I'm thinking of calling my small little acreage and menagerie of animals "The Phunny Pharm". How about "the Ark of Angels Acres"

-- Sheila in NC (nannie@intrstar.net), May 06, 2002.

Ok. It is a one hundred yr old gray farm house with a big red barn, a few outbuildings, lots of big beautiful trees. Maple, walnut, etc. The pasture is rolling with huge trees. It is 11 Acres total and we are surrounded by corn/soybean/wheat fields. The creek is across the street and lined with trees. (that's where the coyotes live) If you look out of the loft of the barn, you can see farmland all around. Rolling land. It's beautiful. (Folks from the city just don't understand why we live out in the middle of nowhere. SHHH, don't tell them our secret! They can stay where they are, lol) This place gives us such peace and comfort. It is our idea of heaven!

Hope that helps!

-- Cindy in IL (ilovecajun@aol.com), May 06, 2002.

A little off subject but my parents always swore they were going to get a ranch and use the stick figure of a wheelchair as their brand (ya know, the handicap symbol for parking spaces). Seemed like everything they owned had something wrong with it: horse with a club foot, a deaf cat with a missing tail, neurotic dog, etc. LOL

-- Najia (najia274@yahoo.com), May 06, 2002.

You guys are so funny! Jay, you are hilarious! :D I like Apple Creek Farm, but I can see why you'd want something different. When you described it to me in your email, the sound of Apple Creek really conveyed the feeling of the place. Beautiful, pastoral. We have a creek on our place that runs in the winter. The cayotes like to yip and yowl from down that creek. My husband named it Cayote Creek.

Our place is so much like Tuscany, Italy. My younger daughter was jokingly calling it Rancho de Tuscany. My husband's old dad calls it "the 33" because it's 33 acres. The valley we are in is called Wildcat Canyon. We might call it Cayote Creek Farm. There is a place near us called Rancho All Ours. That one makes me laugh! I loved the Done Runnin' too.

It's fun to go through a naming consideration. Just hearing everyone's ideas made me laugh.

-- Christine Baillie (towanda515@yahoo.com), May 06, 2002.

Our farm name is Promised Land. The last one was Still Waters. How about ""Waggin tails""????

-- teri (dnsmacbeth@aol.com), May 06, 2002.

Heavan's 11, The Ark's Lark, (I like Ark too) Coyote Creek Farm? I just hope you can keep your understanding with those Coyotes we often think we should have named ours the Coyote Cafe.

-- Ross (amulet@istar.ca), May 06, 2002.

My place is called "South Paw Way" because I am left handed and for the first time in my life, things will be done my way or not done at all since I will be living there alone. I also tagged on "Home of the little red hen" because I am tired of free-loaders. Take your time and it'll come to you. Good luck.

-- Robin Downing (Southpawrobin1@aol.com), May 07, 2002.

Singing Creek Ranch. You said the coyotes howl from the creek, and everyone joins in, and Ranch because of all your animals. Or Maple Shade, for all your trees.

-- Cindy in KY (solidrockranch@msn.com), May 07, 2002.

We bought cut over land...thus "Stumpy Acres"

-- julie (jbritt@ceva.net), May 07, 2002.

Wow, Now there are some ideas. We have seven children, oldest 11 to 11 mo and we have prayed for a farm for many years, well this was the year and we closed in March. Now the work begins, although the name was a little easier. Heritage Acres is our farm's name. Psalms 127:3 "Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

-- Steve (bunchahicks@truthmail.com), May 07, 2002.

Ours is just "little acres" This is farm country with everyone having large ground for tillin'. Here we are on ten. We do a lot with these little acres, so that is what we call it. I couldn't use it for my new business ( I make things from wool) as the name was used so it is "our little Cottage" (which is really an old farmhouse too but....it is a 'Cottage business')because it reflects how I feel about things more than just the physical surroundings.

HOME

-- Mel Kelly (melkelly@webtv.net), May 07, 2002.

Okay, we've decided!!!! Are you ready for this? Just as the email came from Mel & Donnie in Bluebird Valley, and we read "HOME", it made us feel warm and we knew it was right but something was missing. Then we hit on "Welcome Home Farm". We love coming home, and we want the animals to know that when they arrive, this is their home. (I know they can't read but humor us) ;)

I would like to thank each and every one of you for your input. You all had some very nice ideas. And you were right, it would hit us when we heard it!

-- Cindy from Welcome Home Farm in IL (Ilovecajun@aol.com), May 07, 2002.

farm/home names i have had and loved

"squirrel haven," this was a place in town , we had oaks and tons of squirrels Deeply rooted our current farm is Pondview Dairy

other names i like Elfhome aching back acres poor mans rest

my suggestion is , what feature of your farm or property is most prominent.. or what weakness do you plan on building on?

think about that, then make a list of names for your place.. then you and hubby can pick your fave, or just draw out of a hat :)

-- Beth in ND (famvan@drtel.net), May 07, 2002.

Cindy - Great name! Lots of other good suggestions too. I tried to respond earlier & our internet access went out temporarily. Enjoy.

-- Debbie in IL (debbie@fli-soft.com), May 07, 2002.

"CAJUN CORRAL"

-- Mike in PA (smfine@yahoo.com), May 07, 2002.

I know you already settled on a name, but had to put my 2 cents worth in. How about "Peas and Hominy farm"? Near here there is a place called Bar S Ranch - I think that's on purpose - it's very secluded.

-- Deborah Stephenson (wonkaandgypsy@hotmail.com), May 07, 2002.

You just know when something twigs don't ya?! Welcome Home Farm, a friendly happy name, who could argue? Congrats, we'll want to see the calling/business card next.......

-- Ross (amulet@istar.ca), May 07, 2002.

You said: >>>>This place gives us such peace and comfort. It is our idea of heaven!

Sooooo, I was going to suggest something with the word "Serenity" in it.

I see you found what seems to "feel right" already. I've changed the name of my place three times already. LOL!

-- Judy (JMcFerrin@aol.com), May 07, 2002.

What wonderful answers! Love the one you settled on. Our farm is called the Rock N R, after my husband, Roger, one rockin guy! But we are in South Georgia so I tell our friends that it's really the Redneck Riviera!

-- elliemae (elliemae@surfsout.com), May 08, 2002.

Someone mentioned Ark. I was going to suggest Ark'n Home Farm.
