A/C question...why is it blowing hot air?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

My window a/c is blowing hot air except every once in awhile I can hear the compressor click on and it blows cooler air for a minute. How can I fix it?

Thanks in advance...

You may need freon, in which case, you will need a licensed technician with the stuff to replace it.

May be stupid of me to ask, but, is the thermostat turned to warmer? Try turning it the other direction.

Nope,it's on coldest setting.I'm thinking maybe the compressor is the problem,it kicks on and off...mostly off.

That is really strange. I would expect it to turn ON and OFF an equal number of times (+ or - one).

The above response about freon sounds correct as you have described a classic case of low, not empty, freon.

Mine used to freeze up alot and blow hot air. I would have to shut it off get the ice off and then it would start cooling again.

Check to see if your thermostat sensor tube is touching the condensor coil. If it is pull it away from the coil. This will give it a false reading saying it is cool enough when it is not. The thermostat sensor is located in front of the unit behind the filter...the metal wire looking thing should not touch the coil.

Good Luck.

Well, Joe, as a genuine certified true-blue nitpicker, I have to say - Welcome, brother.

10 to 1 your iceing up. But I always had beter luck with the sensor tuching the coil. Wichever way it is must be wrong if your iceed up.

Sometimes too the coil gets dirty and needs to be cleaned. One of the better ways is to take the unit out of the window and use a hose with a high pressue nozzel to wash out the dirt.

The overloads on the compressor might be shutting the compressor off, then when the overloads cool, the compressor comes back on. If this is the case, either the overload bi-metal switch is bad or the compressor is starting to seeze (spelling) up. You will need an amp probe to check the amps of the compressor. Compare this reading to the name plate on the a/c unit to see if the amps are normal or if they are running high. Also if the outside coil is dirty, this can cause the compressor to pump against a high head pressure and pull high amps. This is all I can add for now.
