What are worm beds?

I've heard of people keeping worm beds under their rabbits. What exactly are they?

My main source of income now :>) Its vermicomposting. We have a catagory on it in the older threads section of this forum. Some of us have sizeable herds of red wigglers and nightcrawlers. Feel free to email me if need any info.

A worm bed is wider than a worm sofa.

Ok now for a little more acceptable response. A worm bed under rabbits is a good thing. You can use boards to hold the worms in or just put worms under where the rabbit's hutch. The way these work is the rabbit manure and the dust from the feed will feed your worms. In return for this you will have very little smell and will end up with great compost for your garden.

Jay....I have a question about red wigglers...are they the typical everyday worms you find in rich soil? And are they sort of reddish colored with thin white bands encircling their bodies??

Red wigglers are Eisenia fetida and are common in manure and are hearty composters, E. andrei is a close relative and is as suitable for composting. Red earthworms are Lumbricus rubellus are more of an "earthmover" worm and range in color from purple/maroon at the top anterior to a lighter pink at the tail and underneath. They are also thicker bodied between the clitellum and head. They are suitable for double duty as composters though. I try to keep a mix of all of the above species in my bins to accelerate decomposition timeframes.
