Homesteaders are the most Unreasonable People in the World !

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world

The unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself

Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man

George Bernard Shaw

We also only hear half of what is said to us, understand only half of that, believe only half of that, and remember half of the rest.

I totally agree with about half of that, half-heartedly, I think.

Novina, that was half-hearted.

Ain't it the truth!? Shudder to think what this world would be like without us stubborn, "out of the box", types. Boring to say the least. Thanks Joel for the post. Novina, here's something from Shaw that follows the same lines as Joel's post.....

"People are always blaming their cicumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in the world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can't find them, make them". George Bernard Shaw

I have half a mind to give you all a piece of my mind...wait, that's not reasonable....never mind.

Great! Here's a quote from Mother Nature, "Adapt or Perish", not GBS but there it is! LOL LQ

Can't recall who said it, but I always liked " A pessimist will stand on deck cursing the winds, an optimist will stroll the deck, certain the winds are soon to change, A realist will go on deck and trim the sails to best utilize the winds that are available." I always try to remain rooted in reality :>)

...and a Taoist will stand and appreciate the wind for what it is, and a chauvinist will merely break the wind...

Paul, I first heard that in Bobby's eulogy and I've spent every day of my life since trying to live in that manner. I never realized that Shaw wrote it until just now. Thank You very much !

I read in a recent Back Woods Home magazine that it was much better to be a pessimist.

An optomist looks at the world expecting a certain outcome and is bitterly disapointed with the results. A pessimist expects the worst to happen anyway, and is occasionally pleasantly surprised.

Sounds reasonable to me . . . oh man, that makes me unreasonable too, durn it.
