Title says it all. I don't know how it got there but in simple "dummy" terms, how can I get back to normal? Don

Hi Don ... most likely what happened is one or more of your hardware devices decided to not work properly and Windows saw the "need" to start you in Safe Mode so you could take care of the problem. To get it out of safe mode is really simple (as long as everything is working okay). Go to the "Start" button on bottom, select "Shutdown" and then choose "Restart." If that doesn't work, or it comes back up in safe mode again, you most likely have a hardware problem of some sort (either actual hardware gone kaput, or one of the hardware drivers got corrupted and doesn't work any longer ... something like that). Without being in front of the machine, it's hard to tell what the problem is. If you keep having problems, watch the screen and jot down the exact messages it gives you and post them. Will give us more info to work with. Hope this helps.

OK, tried one more restart. Same gray clouds instead of blue. And all the rest is funny looking too. Has been this way since yesterday. Here is what triggered it. Computer was unplugged due to storm. I just plugged it in and clicked on button. Black screen was up with a bunch of stuff it always does at first. Somebodys says--- don't use that outlet as I want plug something in there. So I quickly shut off---mistake! Computer was on maybe 5 seconds. Now I'm in a "safe mode". Don

Try completely shutting it down. Unplug it. Plug it back in and start it up. If you still end up in safe mode your probably do have a driver that was corrupted. As Phil said, without being in front of it to look at all the settings, etc. it is difficult to determine what might be wrong. If you still have the problem, I would call tech support for your brand of computer. Most also have online support as well, but best to use the phone because you can get better results because they walk you through step by step to not only evaluate the problem, but also to correct it. Here's hoping it isn't a Gateway...terrible tech support!

I have seen several cases where the display adapter's settings get messed up, and the computer displays everything in 640x480, 16 colors (just like safe mode). Does it actually say that it is in safe mode (I.E in Windows 95/98, are there the words Safe Mode on the wallpaper), or are the colors just messed up?

Either way, you should try checking for device problems. Double click on my computer, double click on control panel, then double click on System. A window will come up. There should be a tab that says "Device Manager". Click on that. You will see a list of components in your computer. If you could post the names of any of the components that have a yellow "!" by the picture, we can go from there.

this has happened a couple of times to us also...I should try to remember how to get out of it. What I usually just do is call Gateway and the person on the other end walks me through it. I guess it doesn't matter what name of computer you have...I would call your computer company. Good Luck !!!

Go to your device manager. She what is broken. Fix the problem. Reboot the machine and safe mode will go away.

Everthing at Device Manager looks normal. Nothing yellow except the 2 phones at the Modem listings. All items have a + infront of them.

When this first happened yesterday a box came up saying it was going to run in safe mode, the best I remember. I think I clicked on an OK - --maybe. So we been that way since.

Tommorow will call the local shop where I bought this. There pretty good at helping on the phone. Would have right off but you know how weekends are, closed.

Thanks for all the help! Don
