Aubrey, I have had a few RIRs for seven years now and I have never had a RIR go broody--not one!

As a *general* rule Rhode Island Reds don't often go broody. They've had broodiness largely bred out of them in order to make them a more production oriented breed. Naturally there are those birds in the breed that go broody all the time or at least some of the time but they are the exception rather than the rule.

Much the same with Plymouth Barred Rocks as well.

Aubrey...yes I have had a few RIR's go broody but only about 5 out of 200 hens that I have. I have found that even when they act broody, they will not sit on the eggs for very long and have not had much success in getting any chicks from these gals. Hope this helps.
