Current cost of feeder pigs?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Since 2000 we've bought a feeder pig and raised it at my mil's (not enough room at home, at least not til the new house on the acreage is built). In 2000, a feeder pig (about 50 lbs) cost us $50. In 2001 the same size pig cost $60. This year all mil can find is 30 pounders and they are going for $70 each. This is in northern MI, by the way. What are current pig prices around the country? Mil considers this price to be too high and doesn't think we should raise a pig this year. I, on the other hand, think that while it is high, the meat at the grocery store is higher AND I don't know what all those pigs (store meat) have been fed.

Opinions anyone? I told dh this is a sign that once we move to our 40 acres we should get a bred sow and get in the small-scale pig raising business!!

We just put a hole hog in the frezer and it dressed out 250 at the butchers and we only paid $87.50 here in Texas. Pork is cheap here.Cant feed one out for what u pay for it ready to kill. Ended up with boned out meat of almost 200 pounds. Made some good tamalies with the head, ham steaks and pork chops and the rest in sausage (around 80 pounds)all total was around $250.00 including the 87.50 for the hog.

I AM IN TENNESSEE AND 30-50 POUNDERS ARE ABOUT $20.00

-- B.H (FIRE_RESCUE126@HOTMAIL.COM), April 06, 2002.

In my area (coastal Me.) pigs go for about $40.00 to $60.00 each for an 8 wk. old. These are spring prices. In the fall they can be bought for around $20.00. Costs us about 65¢ a pound to raise them to 6 mos. old.

Hello Kris,

Feeder pigs here are about $50.00 or less. You can get them for less if they are from a off season litter and are kind of the wrong size of the rest of the pigs on that farm.

As for raising you own sow you are talking about feeding her around 150 bushels of corn a year. During a year she could produce about two litters of 8 piglettes each. Selling 16 feeder pigs would bring you about $800 a year, which would surely offset the cost of feeding the sow.

Sincerely,

Ernest

We charge between $25. to $50. depending on the age and size. We have 2 sows, raise some for our freezer, at least one for a cookout and sell the rest. We really enjoy them.

Thanks everybody for your answers. The area I'm talking about in MI is a bit south of Alpena, where mil lives. She's been the one doing all the 'pig shopping' (would do it myself, but that would be stepping on major toes if you know what I mean). Guess right now the 4-H kids up there are getting their pigs, so everybody is raising their prices. Mil did find some fall pigs that are now butchering size that we may go ahead and buy ($100 each, live weight about 225 lbs and the guy will take them to the butcher for us) and have butchered now, then wait a month or two to get some 2002 piglets and see if the price goes down alot once all the 4-H kids have gotten theirs.

Kris
