greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I live in NE kansas and would like to get a jersey, geurnsey, aryshire, or brown swiss heifer, bottle calf heifer, or possibly cow. I am on a limited income, as my wife is staying home with our six month old daughter. Well worth the sacrifice, but limits price I could pay. I have a seven year old jersey/aryshire cross and need to replace her pretty soon. THANKYOU!!!!

Question: why do you need to replace your current cow? For homestead use she should be good for many years yet (like until she's a teenager anyway), and it would be a lot cheaper to keep'er.

Yes, I was wondering the same thing. If you had a dairy it would be worth the replacement, however, for family use that cow should continue to produce enough milk until she is at least 12-15 years old. Some even go into thier 20's. Why don't you want to at least keep the cow and raise your own replacement from one of her female calfs.

Hi Shawn, Can you get to Lexington, NE? I think you can pick a Jersey up for about $300.00 at a sale barn. I need to ask my husband about this for sure. Let me know and I will find out for you. Cindy

Thank you for the input! I didn't realize that they would live that long. I am purchasing a Jersey bull (7 month old) for $250.00. I should be able to get a couple replacements from my cow. Again, thank you.shawn
