Pigs still picky

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Just got done reading the can pigs eat anything post, which got me thinking about Laverne and Shirley again. The still insist on eating nothing but bread soaked in milk. Today I snuck in some rice protein powder I bought while trying the Atkins diet (don't ask!). i am concerned about their protein intake. Will this powder help or hurt? I do add eggs when we have extra, and they do have ground they root upon.

They are PIGS. You are spoiling them. They will eat if you get tough. They are a product of their environment. Stop babying them. Go buy a pig feed and give them that, nothing else. They will not starve. Get yourself out of this mindset that they will only eat bread soaked in milk. NOT

I agree they won't starve, you've nothing to lose making them miss a meal or two. Our pigs go nuts for some onions, (we quater them to reduce the chance of them choking, wild pigs never had it so good!) Moistened dry dog food is usually pretty tempting too. Well to a pig and maybe a dog!

Last summer i raised 5 pigs on bread, whey, milk, and garden scraps. They all dressed at 260 pounds. The protein in the milk and whey seemed to be enough. Don't worry about them they are pigs and will eat what they need. cara lewis
