how do I price on barn timbers

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I recently aquired a barn for salvage. It has hand hewned beams with wood pegs and sized apx. 10x12 12x12 and various lengths. All are very solid, and they appear to be poplar and/or white oak. I would like to sell them. I need to know a going or expected price for them. I guess they'd make good fire wood though. If I can't sell them. JackC

they may be chestnut, which brings a far higher price,,would all depend on how much you realy want to sell them or burn them

I think I hear people falling over from that last sentence!!!!! :) :) I hope you have good liability insurance for all the heart attacks you're causing. :) :)

Couple friends around here just want to burn their old barns, or bury. Sigh. I don't know a price on it, but those beams just aren't being grown any more. Saw some stuff on 'This Old House' where there are businesses buying & using those old timbers. A sawmill around these parts drove 400 miles to look at 12 such beams - were too full of nails & chared from a fire for them, they wanted to mill them into lumber. Sorry I don't know what they would be worth in good condition.

We sold 3 recently that were about 8-10 feet long, 8" x 8" square for $100.

Hi, Jack. How many have you got? One place I know of that buys old timbers and mills them into "antique" flooring is Mountain Lumber They are located in Western Virginia, but I believe they'll travel for enough lumber. I have only dealt with them one time and that was only to answer a few questions, but the sales rep I talked to was very nice and helpful.

I dunno about the value of the timbers as,is but if you can be sure there are no nails or metal in them consider cutting them up for primo lumber. If the timers are made of oak or some other quality or even rare hardwood you should be able to get real good money for the lumber.

I'd exhaust all possibilities before cutting them into lumber or--- God forbid---burning them. Someone out there will pay you good money for those. I'd guess even as much as $5 a board foot----so on the 12X12 that would be five bucks per linear INCH. Not bad. I'd check with high-end historic remodelers, etc. Good luck.

Barns Alive. I think the addy is www.barnsalive.com

There is a page of builders, restorers and salvagers. Try a couple of them. Good luck.
