What is the best and least chemical solution to use on windows?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi .. Hope everyone is having a wonderful day. I am looking at some absolutely filthy windows! I cannot take lookin at them any longer..I am sensitive to chemicals..so I try to keep my cleaning solutions simple and use the least amount of chemicals I can. Windex and that kinda thing really put me down. Sooo, I was wondering what some of you use to clean your windows. All hints are appreciated!

Vinegar. Put 1/2 cup of vinegar in spray bottle, fill the rest with plain water, voila! cleaning solution. Make it stronger or more diluted as necessary.

Could you hose them down outside first with water and then clean them ?? The vinegar and water is the best but I have also just used alcohol (not the drinking kind) with newspaper. Don't know why I have done that...probably what was handy and cheap at the time. Use newspaper to clean them with. It really does a great job. We just recently had new windows put into this old house and they are wonderful. You just pop them out and they can be cleaned from the inside !!! And to think I remember my Mother hanging out the second story window on the window ledge to clean her windows !! Good Luck !!!

I use club soda. Just put it in a spayer, doesn't matter if it flat or not. It also seems to repel dirt also. Found out about it in the book Clean House Clean Planet by Karen Logan.

Vinegar in a spray bottle...followed by polishing with crumpled-up newspaper.......

Thanks so much everybody! I have the vinegar on hand and will try it with newspapers. I would like to try that club soda way also. Just one question..do you use the soda straight or dilute it with water?

I am off to ENLIGHTEN my house.

2-3 drops of Dawn dishwashing liquid in a gallon of water (no more then 2-3 drops is all it takes)

wash window with a rag then use a squeegee to dry, paper towel to remove any streaks.

you use so very little and it cuts grease and grime from cooking, smoke from the winters fireplace inside and dirt outside (though I usually hose my outside windows first)

but then I am not chemically sensitive either.

Use it straight out of the bottle. Be careful not to fill the sprayer too full at first because of the fizz.

Very funny, B. Lackie!!!! Hubby got a chuckle; hates Windows!

As a sidenote, I once read that you shouldn't wash your windows while the sun is shining on them. It apparently increases streaks, if I remember correctly. My home has 31 windows and vinegar is what I use (when I ever get to it). Happy cleaning!

I didnt' see this mentioned, but I use a little of the blue windshield fluid. It's cheap enough at 99cents. It is made to deal with anything driving can throw at a windshield so our windows are a snap.
