Hello Cara, Store bought white eggs are painted white to keep them uniform in color. I've never tried dying my brown eggs. I guess if the color wasn't bright enough, you could paint them white first. HA!!

Thank You and the best of luck to you. Nita

One of my egg customers told me today that she uses watercolor markers and lets the kids draw faces and other designs on the brown eggs. She ordered 4 dozen for this weekend, so I guess she knows what she's doing.

We have always dyed them the same as white eggs. Maybe the color is a little different but we are used to brown eggs anyway. Maybe you could try one and see it you like the color.

I agree...try dyeing the brown ones. We did, and found that the colors come out deeper and brighter--the kids loved them!!

Just keep them in the dye a little longer.

Next year save your dry onions skins and place them into your boiling water. It is supposed to turn them a burgundy color. I've never done this myself so I don't have more detailed instructions, but maybe someone else will.

Hey Cara ... good question, and some great responses! My wife and I were talking about this very subject today! We thought about just letting the girls watercolor the eggs themselves, or decorate them with lots of cheapie little stickers or something. Not sure if we came to a conclusion or not, but will let you know what we decide.

Hi cara -

I prefer the colors of dyed brown eggs verses the white eggs! Been dying brown eggs for quite a few years now. I like the richer earthy tones they come out to be. Dye them exactly the same way you would white eggs. And as with the white eggs, the longer they sit in the dye - the deeper the color. I think you will be pleasantly suprised with the colors you'll get.

When I had chickens, I bought those little decorated shrinky sleeves that fit over the eggs. They put a bright, colorful band around the brown eggs.

Oh! I ma sooooo glad somebody sked this! I was just wondering this as well! Last year we had a few goose eggs to do (they are a week behind do to late weather and easter is earlier!) and did buy whites for company that was staying here that week. But this year we were looking at the brown knowing full well that we were not going to buy store bought whatevers when the real thing is sitting right there! I worried the kids would be disapointed though! i am glad to hear it will be good!

Thank you all for your responses, and I am going to dye my brown eggs. Considering we get 2 1/2 dozen a day it doesn't make sense to buy any. Great suggestions! cara

We will dye our brown ones from now on, we did a comparison last year and decided we liked them better also. Just be sure you have let them "age" a few days so they'll peel easier!
