Repair of Fiberglass Rope gasket on stove door?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have a medium "All Nighter" Wood stove that is missing some of its rope gasket on the door. How does one go about replacing this? I tried a few years ago and it just fell out. I would appreciate any help at all.

You need to get the right size rope and just push it back in place. Note you really need to remove all the old gasket and replace it all around the door, not just the small piece that fell out. Lowes and Home depot have gasket kits during most of the winter months. otherwise lehmans or a stove store should have gaskets available.

Hi Steve

If you got to a hardware store that carries supplies for wood stoves, pick up the braid (rope) making sure you get the right size. Also pick up some ready mixed "Furnace & Fireplace Cement". We bought both at our local Ace Hardware store. Allow the stove to cool down, measure your braid to fit the groove, apply an even coating of the cement within the groove the braid will fit into, then press the braid into the groove. Your stove will be good as new!

a PS -

Use ONLY enough cement (a very thin skin) to just hold the rope. We had a very hard time keeping the gasket in the loading door of our Sweetheart cooking stove. Were forever pushing in back into the grove. That's when we tried the cement. The rope has lasted the whole winter season for the first time!

Make sure you clean all the old gasket cement out of the channel before you cement in the new gasket. If not there will be high spots which might prevent you from getting a good seal. Don't over do the amount of cement but use enough so it will work it's way into the gasket a bit.
