Homemade deoderant

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hello everyone, Does anyone here make there own deoderant. I am looking for something cheap! I prefer something solid or gel not a powder. If anyone has any recipes for this and I am also looking for a toothpaste as well. Something minty. Jennifer

While not along the line of making your own, an inexpensive, no mess alternative is to wipe your underarms with a cottonball of mouthwash. I resorted to this after breaking out from powdered deoderants and found the results were more effective also.

One could always become fanatical about cleanliness and take a bath every two or three days!

Here is a link that has tons and tons of make-your-own items.

wash well with soapy water morning and evening, dry well, and dust with cornstarch to keep dry. This works for those with not much of an odor problem. Odor problems are caused by anaerobic bacteria, which means keeping the area clean and dry should go a long way to solving the problem. But you may need to use something besides that kills bacteria, such as a 70% alcohol solution, before applying the cornstarch.

Washing and then dusting with baking soda works to a degree.

You could incorporate Jay's ideal and make you some of those "5 day deodorant pads."

you probably won't want to visit after this, but i haven't used the stuff in general for years!!!!! and i don't shave either, so go figure.

i have a "deoderant rock" crystal thing that i had for about five years until i dropped it in the toilet and it shattered, so i bought a new one. it is bigger and should last probably the rest of my life. i only use it when i am going to situations where i will maybe be "nervous" and work up a stinky sweat doing nothing, or to "hoity toity" social gatherings. yes, i get invited to them even though i am such a pig. i don't get it. it must be my charm in other areas.

i only bathe ever few days as we have an old well and septic, though we go swimming down at the swimming hole most days in the summer. i don't think it is natural to be odorless, but find that washing my pits every morning does the trick. and that is all i do. sometimes in certain circumstances i need to wash them twice in a day, but this is rare.

so, maybe you should experiment with how stinky you really are. i also know that it took me a bit to get to the point of not needing it. my theory is using that stuff messes with your tissues and all, or something like that, so you have to just do it for a bit to get it all rebalanced.

good luck. hope i haven't been too graphic.

Marcee you make me laugh!!!! What in the world is a deodorant rock? I think that bath powder works better than deodorant. There are all sorts of recipes for it mixing cornstarch and essential oils...but I don't know the exact ones. I like store bought baby powder after a shower. I am still giggling about that deodorant rock! heeheehee!

A morning shot or two of WD-40 in each pit does it for me.

-- Cabin Fever (cabinfever_mn@yahoo.com), March 20, 2002.

Oh Marcee--your post really made me laugh today. Years ago I worked in an office and everyone in my office started using the deodorant rock at the same time (there were five of us in a very small room.

Someone once asked," Do you think this really works, or am I just not able to tell and others too polite to tell me"

Another person said, "Surely, with all of us in this small room it really does work or we'd be passed out."

Then someone else said--"it's probably like the emporers new clothes-- we all probably smell--but none of us in this small room could tell because we are so immune to it."

I remember all of us laughing until we cried. I still laugh out loud thinking of that!

WD40??????? That explains a lot Cabin Fever! heeheehee! That stuff will also take off road tar! heeheeheehee! You all always make me laugh!!!! I still want to know what that rock is! Please someone have mercy on my curiosity and tell me! :~D

The rocks have some kind of minerals that are supposed to inhibit the growth of the bacteria and resulting odor. By the way, I tried the alcohol and cornstarch, and it really does work.

I use the crystal & baby powder. I sweat a lot so the baby powder helps me be more comfortable. Baking soda gives me a rash.
