on day 3 it is completly closed, they eye now looks like it is turning

inside out, only a very small area of the green part is visible

the rest is just pink skin, have to pry the eye open to put anything

in it.

does anyone know what is the matter with him and what i can do?

Pattie, Could be several things...two that come to mind are trauma(causing the eye to abcess)or inverted eyelid(in which case the eyelid hairs are scratching the eye and causing irritation and infection).

I don't know any home remedies for either situation,so if these sound possible you might want to call the vet.Maybe someone else in the group has more ideas.

thanks johna, but i no that the cat wasnt injured and had a runny eye when i first got him, have been reading about some kind of herpes condition in cats and am beginning to think that this may be what is happening but dont no for sure...although he isnt in pain it is awful to look at and i am starting to wonder if i should have him put down as the herpes thing says it will keep happening , the poor thing

It could also be an eye infection, pink eye of some sort or conjuctivitis. I would take him to the vet, it may be something very simple to clear up. I don't think you need to put him down unless the vet says it could be a constant problem.

Pattie, Eye infections or eye injuries are painful! Cats(and dogs) often rub the eye because it hurts, thus injuring it even more and eventually causing severe damage. Take your cat to a Vet! If it has scratched the eye and damaged it,your cat will lose it and then you will have a cat that either dies from neglect or has just one eye. Give your cat a break and take care of it. Good luck, LQ

I'd take him to the vet. How do you know the cat isn't in pain? Wouldn't you be if your eye was in that condition? It has to at least be very uncomfortable. If you can't get to a vet, I'd at least try washing the eye with a boric acid based eyewash(pharmacy) several times a day and give the cat some amoxicillin that you can buy at pet or farm stores.

thanks to all who replied and sorry i made some of you angry, i am not neglecting this cat at all, i have contacted the vet i was merely wondering if there was anything i could do at home first before we went.

hope it works out Pattie. I wasn't being angry in my response though I realize it's hard to determine emotions through typed words sometimes. I was just saying come on now, the cat has to be suffering at least a little bit. I sure would be with an eye like that even if I didn't show it. It's not all that uncommon for cats to get eye infections. An eyewash a few times a day and antibiotics usually clear it up in a week. The cat would probably appreciate a place to hang out where there's no bright light also. I can fully understand why you'd try a home method before paying for a vets services. Good luck.

Pattie, can you tell us what you found out about your cat???

One of my baby rabbits had an eye infection and I washed his eye out with preservative-free tears to three days, several times a day, and it cleared up. Baby rabbits sometimes get eye infections if the nest box gets dirty (even tho I've done my best to keep it clean sometimes they poop and do other things before I can clean it out)

Anyway, with a cat or dog I would definatley suggest going to the vet.

How did the kitty get?? what did you find out? suzy
