Hello Johna,

Do you have other dogs? You won't want names too similar. We now have a German Shepard puppy who has been named Max. Someone dumped him out and they don't know what they've missed. We had wanted to get a Blue Heeler pup but Max just showed up one day.

Do you have some names in mind? Like Sweetie or Babe, but of course, a working dog would need a more dignified name like Duchess or Queen. You may have a name in mind that was the name of a dog you hade one time in the past.

Good Luck and enjoy the puppy! Nita

I got hooked on names from mythology when I was an english major. Here are a few of my favorites and their meanings:

Isha -- one who protects Kali -- a bud Freya -- fertility goddess Diana -- the goddess of the chase or goddess of the moon Astrea -- (maybe just "Astra" for short?) goddess of justice Athena or Minerva -- goddess of wisdom Bellona -- goddess of war (maybe "Bella" for short?) Clio/Cleo -- one of the muses Dido -- Queen of Carthage Hera -- Wife of Zeus Nyx -- Goddess of Night

Other names from dogs I know -- Mia, Lucy, Dindi, Scout, Maya, Comet, Star, Thunder, Slate, Bear ...

I have a blue heeler and we call her "Blue"

I always wanted to name a dog "Pavlov" which would be an inside joke for anyone who took Psych. 101. But when I got my Heeler/Border mix, he already had a name, and you just can't shout, "Pavlov, come here Pavlov!"

Archaic trade names have a cool sound "Bodger"(a chair maker) "Cooper"(makes barrells) etc.

'Monarch Jan' is an anagram for your e-address.

Hi Johna, Firstly, is your new Australian Cattle Dog pup, blue or red? They come in both. One of the ways I like to pick a name is to get out a map of Australia and look it over. You can find great names just looking at places! Another way is to get library books on that wonderful continent and look for names there. The series "Outback" by Aaron Fletcher is a great source of names(they are available at used book stores in paperback too)as well as being teriffic stories of Australia. The litter my Cattle Dog is out of(they have small litters, this one was four pups)are all named after famous Lawmen. I check out books about the wildlife of Australia too, good names there. Have fun, enjoy your pup and don't forget to USE HIS BRAINS!!

Elsa - as in "behave or elsa tan your hide".

Running joke here is the next dog is named Damnit. Come Damnit! Sit Damnit! Bcollie's name is Peg though; after my Father's BCollie from years ago. Next one will likely be Dixie, or Dix.

If I ever get another ACD I'm thinking, Nip is what I'll name it.

Give them all the same name, girly, boy, etc. Usually when you call one they all come anyway, so just always name your dogs the same name even if you have a dozen.

There are so many cool ACD names that I'd love to use myself...."Rake", "Blade", "Cinch", "Strike", "Whip", "Tuck", "Spin" etc. (active names for active dogs) ;o)

But, I agreed with my husband to give all our animals people names so our three ACD's are "Peg" (shot for "Peg A'Sue"....sounds like Peggy Sue or almost like Pegasus because she can jump SOOOOO high and just floats thru the air), "Simon" (as in "Simple Simon".....we thought he might be a little dense, but it turns out he has PRA and is losing his eyesight), and "Gidget" (a play on "Midget" since she was SO much smaller than all her littermates).

Our heeler/aussie's name is Rocket J. Dawg, Remember Rocket J Squirrel in Rocky and Bullwinkle? The name Rocket fits this dog to a "T"
