How to make BBQ beef sandwiches?

I am unable to get a hold of my Aunt for her wonderful BBQ beef recipe, and I have a bottom round roast in the oven already. I know she cooked it covered, with a little water, until it was falling apart, but after that what do you do? I have a bottle of BBQ sauce but is it better to make your own?

I just add a bit of molassas and finely diced onion to prepared sauces, some times hickory flavered sauce also. The trick is to hold off putting anything on the meat until the last 10 minutes with the heat cut in half, this prevents those little black crispy crunchies of burnt sugar.

1 large onion, chopped

oil to saute onion

¾ cup ketchup

1/3 cup lemon juice

3 Tbsp sugar

3 Tbsp Worchestershire sauce

2 Tbsp mustard

½ tsp pepper

Saute onion till transparent. Add other ingredients. Simmer 20 minutes.

Variations:

A. Add 1 Tbsp Heinz 57 Sauce

½ tsp Tabasco

1/3 cup molasses

B. Substitute 2 Tbsp. butter for oil

Substitute maple syrup for sugar

Add ¼ - ½ tsp. Cayenne pepper

Debbie, just cut up the roast and stir in the BBQ sauce. The amount of sauce to add is up to you. Some people like their sandwiches drier, some like them soupy. Just use your own judgement, keeping in mind that you can always add more sauce, but it's a bugger getting it back out once you've added too much. :)

I LOVE homemade chopped BBQ sandwiches! I think it is better to make your own sauce. Rose's sounds good! And here's another: One bottle of ketchup (about 30 oz. size) One 12oz. can of beer One large white onion One bulb garlic (not clove, the entire bulb) One Tbsp. ground red pepper 3/4 cup honey salt to taste Grind up the onion and garlic in a food processor until it's a fine pulp. Put all ingredients in a soup pan and simmer 'til thick, stirring occasionally. YUM!

Rose' recipe sounds like my own! It is a favorite of my family, and a hit with anyone else who tries it.

Try using the same sauce on pork that has been cooked in the crockpot for half a day. MMM, MMMM, Mmmmm...

They were wonderful!!! I spent time "pulling" the meat, and then added not too much sauce, and wow it was soooo tender and good! My first try at them and my husband loved them too. Thanks everyone!
