Uh, Dave. Did I miss something? When I clicked on the link for making my own chicken feed I got something about tires. What did I do wrong?

Wishing you enough.

Dave, this is a good site. Jason shared it with us in December, but it's time to share it again. Thanks! Lionsgrip

If you want a simple recipe that doesn't include animal products I found this one in an old homesteading book. We use it for our laying hens and they continue to provide us with an egg a day from each of them.

16% soya meal 42% cracked corn 42% oats

We also provide them with grit and oyster shells as well as vegtable scraps.

I was out doing some work in the yard this afternoon and Igot to wondering if I could grow and make my own chicken feed. I decided to post my question to the forum and lo and behold as I come to the forum someone has beaten me to it. I guess great minds think alike!!! Thanks for the info.

Susan, what form are the oats in? Steam crimped, whole, rolled, steelcut....just curious. I don't have hens yet, just researching.

Great info! Thanks, Dave! I've been thinking of making my own feed, but haven't even started researching. You just saved me a ton of time!

I've got chicken fever, too ~ been going through the catalogs and looking at pictures/info at the feathersite.com. I can't wait 'til the chicken coop's cleaned out, wire replaced, etc.! There's a hatchery about 2 hours from me, so we'll make the trip when we're done. Oh, what fun! Thanks again!

Thanks for fixing the address link "cowgirlone".Harmony,I am going to try the cornish-x broilers this year.Last year we incubated eggs from eggbay (BR,RI,BO)they did not turn out as expected, they either got to much exercise(free ranging) or I waited to long to butcher, and I was just not impressed with the small breasts compared to the x crosses.Going to pick up the ordering brochure tomorow!Take care know.Dave

Debbie, the oats are whole oats. Hope this helps.

Susan, That's what I feed my chickens and they are laying good. The roos we ate were realll goooood! But I collect grass and green oat stems out of the pasture for them too. Sounds like most of ya'll in the forum live in cold country, so maybe there no "greens" yet.
