I have seen several people mention using a kids wading pool for brooding chicks. Sounds perfect. But how do you keep them from hopping out as they get older?

J, I use a cardboard wall all around the pool, about 18 inches tall. By the time they can jump out of this, they need more room anyway. Hope this helps!

do not use it for ducks...with water...they will drown.

I put chicken wire over the top. You can fasten it easily by just turning it under the rim of the pool and you can make it higher if you need by pulling it up in the middle. The heat lamp still does its job and you have clear view.

You know what we use?A truck cap with a heat light under it.In the barn til weather is suitable outside after that.

These work great for brooding. As Cowgirl said you can use just about anything around the rim.Cardboard,or I use a piece of leftover garden fencing,set right on the floor, 24 " high and close-pen plastic bags around it. I like pine shavings on the bottom. They will outgrow this VERY FAST so be ready for a larger space for them with room to put some clumps of grass or clover or whatever for them to have fun with.
