Tines for Troy Built tiller

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have a Troy Built Horse tiller that needs new tines. I bought the last set mail order from Kelley's and wasn't happy with them. They wore out fast and I broke a tine. I have tried to call Troy Built but I guess they are shut down while they are being bought out. Does anyone have any suggestions on a supplier of quality tines for my tiller?

Hi Emil, Try local (mom&pop) small engine repair shops in your area. Lot of times they will have old machines that they use for parts - the prices around here are dirt cheap for used equipment. And the older stuff seems to be better built. Daryll

Why not buy them from Troy-bilt? It looks like MTD has completed the buyout of Troy-bilt and business is back to normal.

Another possibility is Sears. I think Sears sold Troy-bilts at one time. Sears has an 800 number for ordering parts that can be found on the internet or probably in your phone book. I found that buying GE parts from Sears was cheaper than buying them from GE. I'd call Sear's first if you have the Troy-bilt part numbers for the tines and check for price and availability.

Do you have a local dealer???The nearest dealer for us was 50 miles away, and usally kept tines in stock. The last time I replaced them I used the ones that have a hard-facing on the cutting edge of the bolo tines. That was about 6yrs ago and they still show no signs of wear,at that time I think the price was about $90.Seems kinda high for the set of tines but the first set only lasted about 3yrs........

Take your old ones to a quality welding shop and have them weld the tines with a hardened coat rod, ground down to useable shapes, the same rods used on grader blades, they will outlast you.

You might want to go with a set a "custom tilling tines" rather than regular ones. A bit more $$, but will last so much longer. Also, there are imitations out there...make sure they are made for the Troy- Bilt Tiller.

I had the same problem in finding tines, but I found some at this website. Haven't gotten them yet, but the price is much less than other sites I checked. Only $68 for an complete set for a 8HP Horse model. Go to http://www.mfgsupply.com/cgi-bin/cat.cgi/index.html? id=TvJrxD5L
