They cross wonderfull and are just adorable. Had two doelings born the other day out of my alpine doe and my ober buck. I can't wait to show them!!!! They look alpine with a strong set of legs and great face. I also crossed my ober buck with two alpine/lamancha cross does. Having fun with the experimentals this year. I sold an alpine doe that was bred oberhasli and she had the most wonderful buckling. Big strong and handsome but is solid black. He will have a life of a pack goat. Pack goat people pay $$ for those crosses since they seem to get the best of both qualities. Go for it.

Well actually they were in the same herd book, years back. Swiss Alpines are the Oberhasli of today, with French Alpine being used as the term for Purebred Alpines. Amercian Alpines are more than likely bred up from miss colored Saanen, Togg and Oberhasli, when a kid is miss colored at birth they are put into the grade registry since they do not conform to breed standards. Bred to Alpine bucks the progeney make Amercian Alpine status in 4 years. So other than a color change, and delicately here..........a loss of stature and udder strength, there really is little difference. Vicki

Well, if it is his does being bred to your buck, it shouldn't matter too much to you. :) I have considered breeding my American Alpines to Obers, but haven't tried it. There have been some very beautiful animals out of the combination, the Sodium Oaks Alpine herd had some Ober blood if I understand it correctly. Dominant- the chamoisee color, sometimes you will even get red, but not always exact Ober markings, the dish face seems to be dominant, and so do hocky legs, which are sometimes a problem with Obers. From what I have read, much of the Oberhasli gene pool was absorbed into the American Alpines, it may explain why the red chamoisee color is so prevalent in some of these lines, and the dished face, too.

I bought a French Alpine that my friend had bred to her Ober buck, Highlander. she kidded with 2 kids that spring, 2 yrs ago, twin does. Molly kept one, I kept the other. Now this makes it even more interesting because the dam was brown with balck trim, very much like my GCH doe Bayview Don't Even Ask. The does were born borwn, Shawls, my doeling turned out brown, was very dairy like her dam. Ocean Mist was also brown, but reseambled the ober look, smaller in stature and had a deeper brown color. The doeling I had was 3rd at VA st fair in 2000 as a sr kid, she did very well, better than I expected considering the competition.

Speaking of the ruby red or red chamossiee color Rebekah, my Sweet Dreams Gryfalcon Nighthawk is throwing some really flashy colors this yr, have lots of ruby reds with brown and black trims, very sharp colors. I also have a buckling out of him that is that red chamoissee color i love so much. My best doe, Jackie's daughter (well, my best Gemini breeding) is a ruby re dor red chammy, I love her color and her udder is going to be spectacular this yr. I can't wait for nationals:):):)

I will probably not breed a ober/alpine again, but I will say that I sure like the looks of the obers. obers don't ge tthe recognition they deserve at shows. My humble opinion.

Fella I bought my "Obers" from bred to an Ober buck YEARS ago to get an Alpine with a carmel front and darker back quarters (chamoisee). YEARS later his women are still throwing Native on Appearance Obers! Even from Alpine women. White and black Alpine women. Bred to Alpine bucks! So, I guess if you don't want Obers spooking around for years you might rethink it for next year. I personally LOVE the Ober look. Little delicate ears, lovely brown colors (don't get any Ober people started on Ober colors - there is a standard but all kinds of bay brown color shades). Anyway, a Ober/Boer cross is beautiful too. And the same letters!! :o>

I love Oberhasli goats, but I have no idea how to pronounce it. Please give me a clue!
