making seed tapes?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I know that there was an old thread about making your own seed 'tapes' but I can't seem to find it. I had a 'recipe' for the glue but can't find it. Thanks for your help.

One glue, awhile back, was a mixture of flour and water. The old simple homemade glue, adjust the ingredients to get the consistency you want.

I think egg white works better

Use scotch tape. Once it gets moist it looses it's stick, but by then it's in the ground.

I cut paper towels (white only) into strips and use a mixture of flour and water as a paste. I use a tooth pick and put a bit of the paste on the towel and then the seeds. I put them the length apart that I want them to be when I plant them. I let this dry and then store them until spring and ready to use. Another thing I use are newspaper pots that I make over a can. I wrap a full page strip around a can leaving an overhang of between 1 and 2 inches and then I wet fold it over at the bottom and wet it down and then let it dry. I then remove it from the can and fill with a potting soil and place in a large plastic greenhouse tray and start my tomato and pepper seeds in March for early planting. I believe it was on RebeccaKohls.com where I learned of this a couple of years ago and it does work. Jenn

Sorry, it is rebeccas garden.com, go to projects, on the left it says projects, from there click on to fruits and vegetables and I believe it is called newspapers cells or something like that. It is all there on how to make them. Jenn

I just use Elmer's. It's water soluable, so the seeds do okay once they get wet enough to loosen the glue (overnight or less after a good watering.

plain old t.p. and a spray bottle of water to mist the bottom layer after i lay the seeds & before i lay the top layer of t.p. down.

go light on the h2o & the tape is ready to roll up w/in a few hours & store or it can be planted immediately.

seed tape is the only way to go w/ carrots! well, that & a board over each row to keep the moisture up!

You take 2 ply toliet paper and use (plain) knox gelatin for the glue...the knox is good for the seeds also. Hope this helps!
