Hey Alan... (Re: Seminole Pumpkin Squash Seeds) (Gardening - General)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

You mentioned that you have had good success with growing and storing Seminole Pumkin squash. Being that I'm in Tallahassee, I'd like to try them as well. Any chance you would send me a few seeds from last year's crop? I'd be happy to send you a SASE for the cost... let me know.

Thanks, Otter

Response to Hey Alan...

Hey Otter,

Unfortunate circumstance did me out of being able to grow a summer garden in 2001 and in 2000 I grew Waltham Butternut so my stock of Seminole Pumpkin is going on three years old now. Both Seminole Pumpkin and Waltham Butternut are the same species (Curcurbita moschata) so you can't grow them at the same time for saving seed without taking a lot of precautions so I alternate years. I'd be hesitant to give someone old seed for fear of poor germination.

I can, however, offer an alternative. While looking for something else I found that the Southern Seed Exchange carries Seminole Pumpkin seed and you can get to it from this link Southern Seed Exchange.

In fact, I'm ordering a pack for myself in case my seed does poorly this summer.

Hey - thanks for the link. How does the size of the Seminole Pumkin compare to a Butternut?

Comparing the fruit that I get the Seminole Pumpkin seem to run about about one and a half to twice the size of a Waltham Butternut. Seem to be a bit sweeter too. The shell color is nearly identical. I like both right well.
