Need orange horse blankets for horses near wildlife management area

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I live right next to a 80,000 acre wildlife management area. I have two horses that I am afraid will get shot. The one mare is white and I am worried a hunter will see a flash of white and shoot at my horse mistaking it for a deer. Does anyone know where I can find neon orange horse blankets and saddle pads? I get about a zillion horse catalogs and I don't believe I've ever seen a safety orange horse blanket, although BMB and a few others make custom blankets in a huge variety of colors. I think you can order custom BMB blankets and sheets thru Valley Vet Supply. If you're handy w/ a sewing machine, you can make your own- Suitability.com has patterns for about $10. While you're riding, wear hunter orange yourself and make lots of noise. A saddle pad would be covered for the most part by your saddle. I only worry about my horses during deer season for modern guns, which only lasts for a few weeks. Some of those hunters are real idiots. Bowhunters and black powder hunters seem to be a bit more responsible.

I bought bells for my saddle so when I rode, it would make noise. I was able to get an orange halter but also made my own blanket.

I live on the edge of a 12,00 acre management area. I raise goats and a few of mine are brown. I also have a few horses and I just live on pins and needles during hunting season--- and even when it is not. Some people will shoot them just for kicks.....I put orange collar on th goats and try to keep the mares near the house.

Might be easier to buy the fabric and sew it onto a horse blanket. You also might be able to buy a white blanket then dye it. gail

I have seen the orange blankets and saddlepads in tack catalogues, but I don't remember which ones. I got some 50 cent orange bandanas from the local military surplus store to sew together to make light blankets. When riding, I wore orange vests that cost me 50 cents each.

This is pretty ironic - back in November (during our hunting season), I got a new sewing machine and hubby suggested I make some orange blankets for our horses, and maybe a few extra to sell on consignment at our local tack shop. Wonder if that would really go over?

I have seen them in llamaa/alpaca breeder catalogs. I know of several dairy farmers that use florecent paint and paint the word "COW" on the sides of his animals during deer season.

State Line Tack carrys and sells them, they are quite popular around deer hunting season.

Hi Edie...I would just buy some blaze orange fleece and sew it to a blanket the animal is already comfortable with. If you don't want to use it always, just secure it with velcro so it can be easlily removed, washed and stored until you need it again.
