What is a good boar worth

what is a good 3 year old boar worth? We just bought a new 9 month old boar for $250. We thought the older boar would still be worth $150. Is that a fair price?

It depends on the boar. I have a friend that paid 5k for a championship Duroc- and drove 1000 miles to pick him up. One of his sons sells for 500 easy. A purebred with champ lines could really put out some nice pigs when bred to mixed but good quality gilts and sows. A relatively inexpensive way to upgrade the herd.

The problem with a 3 y/o boar is that they get too big to service gilts. IVF could overcome that, or just use him for larger sows. Pick his best son for the gilts.

Good luck- I really miss raising hogs. Hope I can get back into it one day.

Jay, this fall they were selling for 19 cents a pound here. I personally think $150. is a fair price for a 3 year old boar. It probably depends on where you are located. We sold one recently to a fellow that needed a teaser for his sows. The boar was around 600 pounds and was too big to breed his sows. (they couldn't hold the weight). (Our sows are huge so we had no problems). In my opinion, $150. is not a bad price, but maybe that's just in my neck of the woods! HA! Best of luck!
