Maureen, maybe you should try to repost your question. Looks like something didn't work quite right.

I have had the vaccine series for over a year now. No problems so far.

Four of my five children have had the vaccine and all four have a speech problem. Caused by the vaccine? I will never know for sure but if I knew then what I know now my children would not have had the vaccine. If you are getting the vaccine as an adult then I have never heard of any serious side affects.

That is interesting, my yongest had it and also has a speach problem, he is capable of correct speach, but doesn't quite hear the difference between his speach and others that speak correctly, He thinks he is saying it right and with effort can "get it" (the difference) and there after can remember to do it right if we take the time to make him repete it. But I don't know that it was the shots because his father also has a speach problem, so what the child hears the child learns and my sons speach in always worse after visiting with his father.

I'm sure there could be problems with the vaccine but I have never heard of the speech problems. I've had the vaccine and have never had a problem...been probably 10 years now since I had the series of shots. Guess it's up to one's personal views. I have heard from my daughters that the hospitals "encourage" babies to have them before they leave the hospital after birth. I guess you have to weigh the pros and cons of this as with any medical procedure.

My nine yr. old son had his second HepB vac. in December. On Dec. 23 he woke and told me his bones weren't working. I thought this was just a new excuse for not wanting to get ready for Church. He then told me he was seeing everything in double Needless to say he ended up in the hospital with what was diagnosed as Guillian-Barre syndrome. He had no use of his legs and arms and his sight was the same. On Christmas he started his first treatment of plasmapheresis. He had five treatments every other day for 10 days. He is one of the lucky ones we are told. His eye sight has returned within the first 48 hrs after treatment. He has regained almost total use of his limbs. In some people it can take up to years to get back all use. Our Neuro-surgeon was extemely sure he got this from the vaccine. He doesn't want his patients to even get a flu vaccine. Now I know any vaccine or virus can cause GBS. But if I had to do it over again my son would not have had the vaccine.

I think you need to figure out why you would want your child to have this or any other vaccine. Hepatitis B is a blood borne pathogen. If your child is frequently exposed to blood products, for example- has to be hospitalized frequently for some reason or whatever, then I would strongly consider getting the vaccine. If your kid is a regular kid like most, who rarely are exposed to blood products not their own, then I would seriously consider passing on this vaccine.

I did considerable research in deciding which vaccines I wanted my child to have. I found that the population groups most at risk for Hepatitis B were those in healthcare professions and those in that late-teen/early 20's sexually active group. My toddler fit neither profile. So I said NO.

At this point we are planning to homeschool so it is not a problem, but I think some daycares and government schools require this vaccine or require parents to petition for a special dispensation to have their children attend school without having it.

By the way, after reviewing the information, we did decide to get the DTaP, MMR, and HiB vaccines based on public health statistics for our area.

Just to share the info, we had a family member with hepatitis, altho not in our immediate house hold, the chance of exposure was low but present. Other wise I would not have vaccinated for hep B.
