Sheepish update on neglected goat.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Well... I am having to eat a bit of crow tonight and I am glad that I proceeded cautiously. The lady called me back and explained the situation. I went back out and examined the doe and believe her account. When this doe was very young, she was attacked by dogs. They not only broke her leg but severed some of the main tendons and chewed off most of the muscles there and on her hip. They did what they could for her and so did the vet and in spite of it all, she survived. The leg is that way after repeated attempt to straighten it. She has kidded before and I recommended that we not breed her any more as I could see her structurally falling apart. SHe was fine with my opinion and agreed since I felt so strongly about it. I would have put her down but she is pretty fiesty for a really crippled up goat. Alls well that ends well!

Don't feel bad, Tana, for asking. You were absolutely right to be concerned, and to ask questions. I would have been upset to hear that you HADN'T questioned her condition.

Tana, This is just curiosity on my part as the man who lived north of Longton,Ks. was killed in a car wreck and he had 20 bucks of various breeds that he used to breed does for people all around the area. Is this the same man? I just do not know a lot of goat people since so many have retired or moved or died! And I miss talking about goats with anyone who loves them like I do. I used to belong to SoutheastKansas goat club but Harold Bays died and Bob died and I don't have any idea who is running things now. I guess I need to do some research and get involved again. Any help would be appreciated. karen mauk
