using both a wood stove & propane gas heating stove?

Recently bought a house that has a propane gas heating stove in the livingroom. In the basement using the same chimney AND flue is a woodstove. Can both of these stoves be used at the same time safely and legally?

Not legally in the county where I live, but different govt bodies may have different rules. Where do you live? Insurance would also be an issue, they may not approve.

my folks had a set up like this when I was a kid, the gas stove cools down the wood smoke, creosote forms quite fast, especialy in cold weather, if you are an experienced wood burner and keep a very close eye on it, prob be ok. if not I would change the set up Good luck, Alan

Bad idea and illegal in most areas. The "what ifs" come into play. What if you have a chimney fire, what if you have a propane leak. Propane is heavier than air, might work it's way to the basement to the woodstove, etc, etc. If you check out most heating equip fires , I believe you would find that people tried to bend the rules and their luck ran out. Be safe. jz
