pig wormer and update on 3 little pigs

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We got our three little pigs Saturday and they are so cute. They are healthy and bright eyed. Didn't see a unhealthy looking pig where we got them at. The farmer had 2 sows ,a boar and 25 little pigs and no bad smell. I think our pigs weigh 25 or so pounds and we got them for 20 dollars a piece. I feel I was lucky to find weaners this time of the year, so if your in Central Arkansas and wants some pigs send me a email and I'll get you in touch with this guy. Mr. pig man said I should worm the girls, any suggestions on the best wormer. Can I use ivomectin pour on for cattle and I also have safeguard paste. Can yal tell I'm excited about my pigs. We have goats and I've raised calves, chickens and rabbits but never pigs. Life on the farm is good!

Pour on wormers don't work well on hogs because of their tough hide. I can only imagine trying to get safeguard down them..... Ivomec injectable will work and you can buy atguard powder to mix with their feed. I think there are some pellets to mix with their feed, too.

Hi Sherry, glad to hear you are raising your own pigs. They can really be fun. This summer see how they act when you mist them with a hose. It's pretty comical. You may already know, but please be careful with your chickens - not to mention small children. Pigs can be a delight but they can also be very dangerous. A pig eats almost anything - I have had a chicken fly into the pig pen, and before I could open the gate the chicken was just a wing protruding from the mouth of one of the pigs. It was not an unknown occurrance for a farm family to lose a child who sat on the fence surrounding the pig pen, and fell in. Just a note of caution, if you are not already a pig expert.

My husband mentioned that with the chickens. I've always heard the expression ole so and so got eat up by the hogs. These little pigs are so cute it's hard to imagine them eating children someday. Oh my .. Note to self, keep small children away from pig pen.

Ivomectin injectable for swine we think is the best. Can be pricey up front but last along time only raising afew pigs a year. We have used it along time now. The fun experience is learning the best way to catch & give them the shot!! Especially when they are getting large...Have fun..

No kidding about the dangers of pigs. I gave away two really nice sows because I was traveling and my 85 year old father was coming over every day to feed while I was away. He insisted on placing the feeder in the pen and trying to get the feed into the feeder- said he could not throw the pelleted feed into the pen because it was unsanitary- I said "Dad, they're pigs!!!!!!". Anyway, I was so terrified of coming home to find his shoes sticking up out of the mud that I finally gave my sweet girls away. Broke my heart, but they weren't worth risking my dad for.
