Two years ago that would be a good deal, but in the local Target store I see DVD's for $6.99, & VHS movies for $5.44, fair selection of older but not real old. Seems they have come down in price.

:-0 I knew videos and DVDs were cheaper over the atlantic but...! Our DVDs are on average £19.99, £12.99 at best. I'm not very good on interest rates but isn't that about $30? You can get videos for £5.99 at best, but they're usually £13/14 too!

How many times do you watch a movie. With the exception of some my kids movies, I never watch a movie more than once so why buy at all? A 1 time rental is about half your purchase price.

Better yet, for about thirty bucks you can get a wireless video cam for your computer, and put it in the chicken coop with a light. Ours are hilarious!

Years of family entertainment!-) Okay, maybe we need to get out more...

For the cheapest and best entertainment, I'll still take the local library. ;o)

I did see a subscription service for DVD rentals which charges a flat monthly fee for unlimited rentals with no time limits or late fees. I think the only limitation is the number you can have out at one time, but even that was a really generous number.

I'll vote for the library also. We can check out movies - for free - and keep them for a week. I love it!

Gary is talking about Netflix. I think you can have three out at any one time (they are sent back in business reply envelopes). It's like $20 a month. Sounds like a good deal if you you are a big movie fan, and saves a lot of trips to the video store.

However, since many of my favorite records are still not out on CD (effectively being out of print), I suspect that my favorite movies won't be on DVD either. I am still waiting for the restored version (the original was badly cut to conform to the 1970's movie industry time requirements) of Night of Dark Shadows (originally came out after House of Dark Shadows). Our library has nothing in the way of movies-- I'd be a lot happier if they had more how-to videos anyway.

Ubless you have small children that will watch the same movie a hundred times, or you have Alzheimer's and forget easily, why pay money for something you will only WANT to watch once???

Our library rents for free, and our video store has tons of 99 cent specials for those times that is more appropriate.

you can also download them from the net for free, high quality not the old obviously bootleg videos. Most movies are available within a day or 2 of being in the theaters. I'm sure all kinds of copyright laws, etc are being broken but it's getting to be pretty common. That Harry Potter movie was on the net for downloading the same day it started in theaters.

You're right, Dave, all sorts of laws are being broken. If people put themselves in the shoes of those who created the original work, or better yet, created something themselves and watched everyone steal it, maybe then they'd stop. But since they're so busy stealing, they'll never be creating....

Aside from the legal/dishonest/moral issues, I wonder how long it would take to download Harry Potter at 28.8k!!!!!! Wow, bet it would be out on DVD before I got it all!!!!!! :)

I vote for the library....ours we can even order ones from other libraries on the interloan system. I love old movies!!! And paul....I am with you on the downloading. With my slow dialup I couldn't even make napster work.

If you rent DVDs alot, you can record it buy buying a computer link to the TV and tape it on the VCR and there you have it a movie for three bucks with the extras on it if you wish.
