Response to prescription drugs

One of the t.v. news shows showed busloads of seniors hopping on a bus and heading up here in to Canada to have their prescriptions filled. With the exchange rate (around 50% or more) the American dollar already gives you one heck of a discount.

Response to prescription drugs

I have driven to the US-Mexican border, walked across, bought what prescription meds I needed, and walked back into the USA.

Perfectly legal. Much cheaper. Same drugs, same manufacturer, just labeled in Spanish instead of English.

Also I have been in Canada numerous times but only bought meds there once.

The kicker is, they are the SAME drugs. SAME MANUFACTURER. SAME FOLKS. JUST LABELED IN DIFFERENT LANGUAGE. The drugs are made in the same factory by the same workers. Just boxed different.

Why? Because the greedy drug manufacturers know they can get MORE MONEY for the same drug here in the USA. Why do you think the price of meds has gone UP MUCH MORE THAN THE RATE OF INFLATION, every year for many years ? Mexico is a much poorer company and the drug companies know they can't charge near as much there. Canada has socialized medicine and to some extent the Canadian government has been able to control prices some. Not a lot, but some.

I have nothing against ANYONE trying to make a fair profit and a fair living. However, I do resent being RAPED. If my income, and yours, went up as fast as drug prices, we'd be on our way to being rich.

And don't even think about getting me started on Congress's annual raises. They give social security recipients a piddly-assed few percent and give themselves much go.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR now I'm mad. Sorry.

Response to prescription drugs

Renee, Yep, Mexico is the place for the cheap prescription drugs. What I noticed was the antibiotics which were a whole lot cheaper down there. Funny note,I got some Immodium pills for the problem of too much wonderfully tasty but high fat mexican food and the pills were tiny instead of those chalky things I can never get out of the packaging without breaking here. I swear they worked better too. The cefalexin pills were about $50.00 cheaper. And Gene is right, we are getting "screwed" by the drug companies. And around here, the folks on social security get to choose between eating or staying warm or getting their prescriptions filled. karen

Response to prescription drugs

I know someone is taking advantage but some time I wonder is it the manufacturer or the drugg stores. Around here they are buying the prime locations, in one case tore down a bank that was worth over two million and built a cvs drug store. Think about that for aminute, you could not make that kind of money with illigal drugs. Just my opinion but what do you think.

David,

Interesting observation, and probably correct. You have to make a lot of money to tear down an existing structure and put up a new one. It is similar to the middle man effect on any producer. The producers make some money, but the ones up the line always seem to make more. Same thing may apply to drugs.

Drug companies are always labeled as evil. I don't get it. They make products that save lives, cure diseases and relieve pain. They spend billions to develop a new products and make them available to people to help with their problems. Then these same people that use the new medicines turn around and badmouth the folks who have given them relief from their pain etc.

It seems that medicine is like the bread analogy. The farmer gets 5 cents/pound for wheat, but we buy whole grain bread in the store for almost $3.00/pound. Someone somewhere is making a lot of money, but it isn't necessarily the person who produces something. The profit is split by many people including, warehouses, truckers, sales people, advertisers, and others I am probably not aware of, not to mention the final one. The drug store. I wonder how much they mark up the drugs?

To those of you that think the drug companies are making so much money I suggest you buy stock in them. But the reality is they are not making that kind of money. Your stock would not make you rich. They may show a profit of say for example $500 million, but a good portion of that money will go into research for the next drug to be developed. If they develop a drug that does not meet FDA standards etc. they have spent a lot of money for nothing. They need cash flow to keep going plain and simple. I don't think they all are the evil people they are made out to be.

Talk to you later.

Be careful, I have gotten two letters from the FDA recently telling me they have detained my shipments: one was for amoxicillian and the other for Cipro.

The other reason drugs cost so much here is that people are sue-happy in the US. People get huge settlements and the money has to come from somewhere to pay the lawyers.

I am with all of you about disagreeing on the prices we Americans must pay in order to get our prescriptions filled. The exorbitant prices are just another way us Americans get screwed over by our government !!! I am 47 years old and legally blind, but can I get S.S.I. to help me meet my living expenses ? Hell no, I can't. I have been fighting for over a year to get help and finally got approved for Medicaid. As I am a diabetic & suffer from hypertension, my medications seem to increase every time I get them refilled. A few days ago, I got refills and it cost me $ 618.42 for insulin, 2 pills for diabetes, 1 pill for hypertension, my hypodermic needles. glucometer strips a antidepressant and a water pill. These pills are only a 30 supply, so if that isn't bullshit, I don't know what is !!! Thank God for my getting the Medicaid, cos there is no way I can afford these prices. We live in such a great country, but it seems as if our leaders care more about these foreign countries, free trade, feeding the poor in other countries and other such crap as this. I don't begrudge helping poor people eat, but I thought charity was supposed to start at home ? Why doesn't our government help the people right here in the good old U.S.A. so that all of us have the provisions that we need in order to survive ? Then if we have any money left, we can help other countries. I couild go on and on about how our fearless leaders screw us over, but I guess by now you have gotten the drift that I think it SUCKS !!! I am hoping to help my friend Jack do some research on how all of us can get our medications at a more reasonable price. And I hope everyone who reads this will try to help also. If anyone wants to write to me, feel free to do so. I love my E- mail !!! Sincerely, Kathy Greene Connersville, Indiana
