The only decoded output from a cd rom is standard cd audio from the headphone socket as there is a built in Digital to Analogue Convertor (DAC). Sometimes your sound card takes this audio output, sometimes it takes the IDE data output and puts it through it's own DAC. When you play a VCD on your computer, you are taking the data from the IDE interface and processing it using the computer. It is like waving around a 10 dollar disk drive and a disk with an WAV file on it and saying that it wont play your music! My advice is to try to obtain an old, small Compaq box and play with linux VCD player software. Did you know the Tivo system uses Linux?
