On a calf they can dry up and be gone in a few days.

Stay on what Tonya? With my lambs I usually dip it in iodine and it usually drys up and falls off within a few days. I watch it to make sure there is not sign of infection but I have never had any. The puppies stay on for anytime from a day to a week. Again I have never had a problem. Kim

Approx 3 days for Kittens & Puppies. It also may take longer in sick or weak animals. As long as it dries up and is not infected there is no need to worry.

I've seen them stay on even longer but as has been said as long as it's dry there shouldn't be a problem. Resist the temptation to pull it or break it off.

Tonya, yes goat umbilical cords do stay on longer than other animals. I do spray mine with 7% iodine to make them dry faster, I also cut them short, say 2 or 3 inches once drier. But when I used to purchase auction barn babies, it was how I could gauge how old they were. With a wet umbilicus they were days old, with a dried but still thick at the base a week or so old, hard but still there, less than 2 weeks, and off by a month. Hope this helps. Vicki

Hi Tonya!

I've seen the cords come off after only a week and some as long as a month, so each is different. The main thing is to make sure it's dry and dipped in iodine like Ross and Vicki mentioned. (Hi you guys!) Good advice on not trying to pull it off, it will fall off in do time.
