Why was Alexander known as Alexander The Great? Who gave him this name?

Ghengis Kahn didn't simply rampage his way through Asia. Most of his "Rampaging" was carefully planned campagins by his brilliant and very successful Generals, Subgedi and Jonchi. They created THE largest emipre the world has ever seen. They even conquered Khwarizm, which was one of the richest and strongest empires at that time. They opened up the link between east and west and were, by my knowledge, the only empire at that time to allow religious freedom. Some of the lesser Kahns, particulary of the Golden Horde, were even christians. Sure, Alexander has respected and all that non-sense chivalry. Ghengis Kahn built, trained, and led the worlds greatest army. The only reason the Mongolian empire fell apart is becuse there wasn't enough Mongols to fill it! At its peak the Mongolian empire had all of Europe in a panic when they invaded Hungary. China would have been conquered if it wasn't for Genghis's death. Europe would have fallen to Mongol might if Odeidgi, Genghis's heir, had not died. If the things had not played out the way they did, Europe, like russia, might have fallen under the yak-tail standards of the Mongols.

Yes. Of course, ancient Macedonians were very close ethnically to ancient greeks and the difference was more cultural than anything.

Modern Macedonians and Greeks have little relationship to their ancient namesakes. Centuries of foreign invasion by slavs, goths, etc have dissolved the old blood lines and created a new ethnic identity for greece and the balkans.

only destiny denies me now the final frontier, the waves of the motionless ocean, it would have been better to persue the dreams which fires the soul, as the sun illuminates the forest over sunset, the dream, the infinite the shadow of the real.....

A must read trilogy on alexander the great by valerio massimo menfridi, to get the idea why he is considered as the greatest conqurer of all time. who would have thought that an ordinary child born to king philip of macedonia n his senscious wife queen olymipas and with the tution from aristotle the great and with the friendship of hepastion and ptolemy would go on to conquer the whole civilised world.

Leka I Madh

There are few places where Alexander the Great's influence has not been felt. His vast empire spread from the Atlantic shores of Spain to the plains of India. His example has been admired and followed for generations to come, and his legacy has been deeply felt by the entire world. It is said that Julius Ceaser himself began to weep as he stood under the shadow of a statue of Alexander the Great, for Alexander had conquered half the world by 19, and Ceaser not even made a name for himself by that age. And how was he Albanian in any way? Well, first of all Alexander was son of Philip II and Olympia. Olympia, was the princess of Epirus, a province in Northern Greece, considered to be modern day Albania, and an ancient territory of Albanian tribes. This relation of Alexander having Albanian blood is considered somewhat feasible and acceptable by the history books, but we want to stretch out the enigma of Alexander. Initially there is the question of where and to what people Alexander belonged to. It is known that Alexander the Great, was really Alexander of Macedon, and the current flag of Macedonia is the ancient sun flag of Alexander's army. This seems reasonable, but what really were the "Macedon" people. As stated in the Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia, "the Slavs, occupied much of the area [Balkans] by the 6th century AD", so it cannot be possible for the now largely Slavic Macedonia to be a descendant from Alexander the Great. Slavic tribes did not come into the region of Northern Greece until well after Alexander's death, which leaves only two people left, the Albanians and the Greeks. It is important tot note that the history books have not labeled Alexander Greek, and therefore he can only be Albanian. Albanian tribes are the earliest known to occupy northern Greece, and that allows Alexander only one nationality. Alexander did not have Albanian blood, he was an Albanian. To Albanians this fact seems very clear, for we have named our currency lek, after Leka I Madh. The Barbaric war style of the Illyrians was deeply rooted in Alexander's spirit, which is good reason for his expertise as a general and a conqueror. More proof of Alexander's Albanian ancestry would have to be the close relations he had with the King of the Illyrians, practically a man of his own kin. There is an ancient legend that the Illyrian king gave Alexander a large, beastly, dog to commemorate his achievements. The beast was so ferocious, Alexander decided to make it hunt bears. The dog showed no interest in this endeavor and lay lazily without moving. This angered Alexander and he had the dog killed. When the king of the Illyrians heard of this he sent him another dog, this time with a message of "not wasting the dog's time with small things". This time Alexander had the dog fight a lion, which the dog quickly broke the back of, and then an Elephant, who the dog forced off a cliff. The extensive diplomacy between Alexander and the Illyrians only suggests that Alexander was an Albanian himself. Also, there is the conquered territory of Alexander. When looking at a map of his advances, oddly enough Illirium and Northern Greece is not touched by his armies. Yet, the Illyrian and Northern Greek tribes did not have armies capable of facing the Great Alexander. But Alexander considered them as one, they were all Albanian. Alexander could not possibly conquer his own land. That is why this area remained untouched. Accepting Alexander's Albanian ancestry opens a vast world of possibilities. There is of course the long Ptolemy dynasty of Egypt that followed after Alexander's death, started by one of Alexander's generals and childhood friend. Accepting Alexander as an Albanian, would mean accepting a big part of Egypt's history to be determined by an Albanian dynasty, that of Ptolemy. Alexander's genius and accomplishments opened a great chapter in the history of Albania. A chapter that has never been forgotten.

I dont believe that any one ruler was better than the other. They all fought great battles at different times for their own respective reasons. There are many pros and many cons in the actions of both of these great leaders. However I have always been a person to take a neutral stance on issues such as this simply because even the most well read of people cannot provide an accurate representation of what these leaders were like, neither can they say who was better. More influential perhaps.

But the point is we did not live those times. Both men killed a great many people and conquered a massive area.

Although I have to ask, why is Alexander the great more popular than Genghis Kahn. In all honesty I hear Alexander's name being mentioned much more that Kahns'

This is probably the most sensible answer in the entire forum.

all Persian emperors like Darius, Xerxes, etc. had the suffix 'The Great'. Alexander was Macedonian. but what he did succeed was to conquer the entire Persian Empire and therby become their ruler and King. therefore, the automatic transfer of the title 'The Great' passed on to him. it's the same principle that we use for Ambassadors where all of them, irrespective of their nationality are referred to as 'Excellency'.

Hope this suffices.

Alexander was the greatest. He achieved way more than anyone else of his time. He traveled into the unknown lands of india. He was heroric, respected, looked up too. Ghengis kharn just rampaged through most of asia, he was never respected just hated. Alexander deafeted opponents that in the past were unbeatable. Before Alexander died at such a young age of 32 he made plans to conquer Arabia, the north coast of Afica and Europe. By this time he would also have a great son to take over as king. And because of his Europe conquest there would have being no Roman empire. Alexanders legacy has lasted (unlike Ghengises) to this day, even with greek gods still being worshipped in northern India. Even indian coins still have Alexander on them. He deserves the title as the greatest conqueror of all time! Jon

Would you not call a ruler great if he were looked up to, inspired by and honored as a king by his people? He was great in almost everyway the books written about him described. His people thought him a God would you not call a God great?

And just so you know, Genghis Khan massacred WAY more people than Alexander...that WAS his strategy, after all!!!

-- Anonymous, February 27, 2004

He was known as that because Alexander meant "ruler of men". He ruled so many places so he really was the ruler of men so he was known as "Alexander the Great."

At the risk of sounding way too serious; many believe he is the one spoken of in the Book of Daniel (exerpts below...); if this is correct, who are we to say who is "Great" if the Lord God himself allowed mention of the man... The "Mighty King"

"And now I will show you the truth. Behold, three more kings shall arise in Persia; and a fourth shall be far richer than all of them; and when he has become strong through his riches, he shall stir up all against the kingdom of Greece. Then a mighty king shall arise, who shall rule with great dominion and do according to his will. And when he has arisen, his kingdom shall be broken and divided toward the four winds of heaven, but not to his posterity, nor according to the dominion with which he ruled; for his kingdom shall be plucked up and go to others besides these." (Daniel 11:2-4 RSV)

"He said, "Behold, I will make known to you what shall be at the latter end of the indignation; for it pertains to the appointed time of the end. As for the ram which you saw with the two horns, these are the kings of Media and Persia. And the he-goat is the king of Greece; and the great horn between his eyes is the first king. As for the horn that was broken, in place of which four others arose, four kingdoms shall arise from his nation, but not with his power." (Daniel 8:15-22 RSV)

I will have to agree with the above entry. Genghis Khan did in fact rule an empire much greater than Alexander. Genghis Khan's military also covered 100 miles a day, a feat not even accomplished during WWII. Also Genghis Khan made sure that the people that he conquered were better off than before him. A unknown fact is that Kahn was making his way across the German rhine and conquered many armies in Europe before a certain family event made them retreat. All historians do not doubt that Genghis could have conquered Europe otherwise. The man with the greatest kingdom wins. Doesnt matter from an objective point of view. Size of kingdom is a quantitative matter, not subject to argument.

well, i think the reason he was considered Great was because, apart from conquering more land that anyone else in such a short time (do remember that ghengis kahn pretty much doubled alexanders life), but also established a common world in which he ruled, and tried to bring about the intermingleing of people. do remember, the lands that he conquered did remain at peace till his death (then again he didnt live all that long, did he?). did trade and learning not flourish as he spread his rule (ie: library at alexandria)

Plus, remember that history, at least the way we remember it, was written from the Greek view, ie: a man just decides to spread the greek culture as he conqueres, what a Great man he is.

and some people saw him as a liberator ie: Egypt was happy to see the opresive persians go as they were religiously stubborn.

Greatness is truely in the eye of the beholder.

Indeed. Why is Alexander the Great, but Attila the Hun, or Genghis Khan viewed as a scourge ? The Startrek episode pitting Kirk, Spock, Lincoln against Genghis Khan et al is particularly irksome.

In terms of land area conquered and wealth, there is no doubt that Genghis Khan achieved more than Alexander. He also built a much more enduring empire. Alexander may have been tutored by Aristotle. Genghis Khan patronized many religious leaders and encouraged the development of diverse thoughts and philosophies.

Alexander also massacared the Thebans. So it's hard to argue that he's more humane. Nor did he advance democartic practices.

So then is it purely idol worship of the classical?

donīt you dare to call Alexander, a killer, it seems that you donīt have common sense, during the time of alexander the great going to war, killing people, was necessary in order to conquer land, and in order to survive. he was, and he will always be, the great conqueror of all times. why?, just try to read more about ancient times, about the great grece, and about alexander the great.

-- Anonymous, January 16, 2003

Depends on what your idea of "Great" is then. Killing a lot of people and looting their lands isn't really "great" to me.

He "may have" murdered his father, razed cities he conquered, often selling the populace as slaves, murdered his best friend, the list goes on. Also, unlike the Romans he was unable to make a lasting empire. As soon as he died, it fell apart to nothing. So really he was only "great" at killing people and stealing.

You might as well call Ted Bundy "the great".

The world would have been better off without him.

What do you think? He conquered half of the known world, and never lost a battle. He even is the richest guy in history (The gold he collected in Persia has a modern day market value of about $800 Billion US Dollars). I think he deserves the title THE GREAT. Read some history books!! They tend to be quite interesting.

At first, he was known simply as Mr. Big.
