wood spliter plans

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I seem to recall seeing plans for a wood spliter in mother earth news many years ago, that used a power steering pump from a car for the hydraulic pump. Is this possible, does any one have those plans?

An automotive powersteering pump will put out about 2000 pounds of pressure, enough to operate a large slow cylinder. 2000 times the square inches of the cylinders plunger surface equals pounds of thrust. It is volume of fluid moved that affects speen of operation.

what mitch is saying,, yes,,its possible,, but would be slow

Slow is ok, I was thinking of splitting those "ugly" pieces one gets when cutting firewood. I don't mind swinging a maul, it's just some of them chunks get a little tough.

A 2 stage pump would be much better

Right. Two stage gives you speed to run the ram up to the chunk and then "shifts" to give you high power at lower speed to whack the "ugly" ones. You could get old waiting for one of the homebrew splitters I've seen to close up on the chunk.
