How do you cut vinyl siding panels ?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have some vinyl siding panels that I tried to cut with a Skil saw. Pieces went in all directions. Luckily, none hurt me. I have a reciprocating saw...will that do ? Or what will do ? Buddy in east Georgia

are you talking about regular vinyl siding!? My dad used a utility knife and a pair of snips. Umm, I think if you use a circular saw with the blade REVERSED it will give you that smooth edge.

a good quality pair of large tin snips worked great for me.

Dad has installed siding (and windows and doors etc.) for over 30 years and has always used a sharp ( you cannot have too many new blades at the ready) utility knife and "tin snips", the ones with the straight scissors part, not the curved ones.

You can use a saw to cut them however you cant just use the regular blades you use for cutting lumber. I has to do with the amount of teeth on the blade the more teeth the smoother the cut. And always back the siding up with some scrap lumber to make it more rigid when cutting. You dont need to turn the blade backwards, that usally only is good for metal. We cut it all the time that way.

a plywood blade on you skill saw,, but reversed as said above,, or a slower way,, is to use snips

I sharpen saws and the best I have found is take a plywood blade with no set in it and cut slow. You can buy trim saw blades that have very little set that work also.

All, repeat, ALL answers were helpful. I went with a fine tooth plywood blade. Mission accomplished !!! Buddy in east Georgia

Take any skill saw blade and turn it around backwards. 28 years experience!
