Horse barn plans

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi, this is the first time I have ever been here. Tons of interesting threads. I will have to check them all out. Right now I am looking for a barn/lean to for horses. We have 5 horses and assorted beefers. we have an old barn which we are planning on restoring, but in the meantime we need a small shelter for them to get in/out. Not going to have them in all the time, just want a stall or two for emergencies, etc. Anyone have any suggestions where to look? I have found Apple Valley Barns which are great, I am just looking for ideas right now. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the forum Jeanne! Just about any simple three sided structure to keep the wind and rain off of the horses and cattle is fine, can be as elaborate or simple as your budget allows. You can fashion easy "stalls" just by partioning of a section of the lean to/machine shed type structure using dimensional lumber as if you were making fence.

Horses and cattle both do better if they are free to come and go as they choose to, so be sure to have ample area for all to come and go, one whole side completely open is perfect, that way no is forced to stay out, or trapped in by the "bullies" of the herd.

saw a quick and easy and cheap shelter for llamas and ponies just the other day. Old wooden fencing,, 2 sides and one for the roof. These were 10 foot sections,, and the animals were pretty happy

I have plans for a run in shed for cows. 10x20 I put one up for my horse and another, closed in as the barn. I'll send it over if you want. It will be sent as an attachment. Let me know.

Jeanne, you mentioned being new here, to help gain info at the bottom of the question page there are old answers, on as many subjects as you can imagine, numbering in the thousands, look under "construction" and "horses", enjoy.

This may be a little more "commercial" than you have in mind at the present, the arch-style poly-fabric buildings ... but this is what we put up ... seemed to be the best alternative for us ... it was less expensive than the more traditional steel sided buildings, went up fast (less than 2 days once the site was level/graded) and is the most flexible.

The one we used here in Kentucky has a website at http://www.quick-cover.net but they are national and I'm sure you can find links to this and other related type companies on a search.
