Hairy Concrete / Crooked Floor

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Our contractor knew we wanted a stained concrete floor, and we found they'd already stained the concrete slab which has fibers sticking out of it. Additionally, they scored it in 4 ft. grids per my request, but some of the lines are noticeably crooked. Now the contractor says they cannot fill the lines and recut straight lines, and the fibers shouldn't be noticeable?!? I should mention that there are no walls, no roof, just the concrete slab--doesn't make sense to me. I question if we couldn't sand the concrete to remove the fibers and fill the scores and recut. Can it be done? HELP! Can someone please give a solution?

I don't know about filling the scores, but the fibers should wear off. We poured a 36' x 36' fiber re-inforced basketball court two years ago. It has a smooth finish. Right after it was done the fibers were noticeable but after a short time you couldn't even tell they were there. The cuts in ours were made with a stone saw. No cracks... yet!

if fibers are showing,, the finisher didnt do a very good job. YOu can fill in the buts, but you will always notice them.. amd it wont matter anyways,, any cracks will still go there. Dont re cut it,,all you will do is amke more cuts that wont do any good.. ONly other thing I can think of, is to pour another slab on top of that one, may not be an option. At least,, you should get some money back from the mislined cuts. OR have the contractor pay for some type of overlay,,like the fake wood flooring or something

Hi Marsha. Burn those fibermesh threads off - that is what the professionals do. I think the rental places have flamers. You can look at them at www.flameengineering.com Sandy

MARSHA....YOU ARE THE BOSS.THE CONTRACTOR IS YOUR EMPLOYEE.IF HE DID SOMETHING THAT DISPLEASED YOU...DON`T PAY HIM.IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE GROUNDS FOR BEING UNHAPPY AND PROVABLE IN COURT.IF IT BOTHERS YOU NOW THEN LIVING THERE FOR 20 YEARS WILL EAT AWAY AT YOU.HE MESSED UP AND HAS TO REMEDY THE SITUATION TO YOUR SATISFACTION.THE FOLLOWING ISN`T WHAT YOU PAID HIM TO DO. [1]FIBER LAYING AT THE SURFACE [2]CROOKED LINES

SINCE ITS NOT WHAT YOU OR ANYONE ELSE WOULD WANT.I`D REFUSE TO PAY FOR IT.I`D HAVE HIM REMOVE IT AND START OVER OR BUILD ANOTHER SLAB ON TOP OF THE EXISTING MESS.BE SURE THAT THIS DOESN`T AFFECT ANYTHING IN THE DESIGN.BUT SEEING AS WALLS AREN`T UP IT MIGHT BE OK.

CORDWOODGUY PS:I`VE HAD OWNERS REJECT FLOORS THAT GOT DIMPLED FROM RAIN.HE DIDN`T WANT IMPERFECTIONS AND NEITHER SHOULD YOU.THE RAIN WAS AN ACT OF GOD.THE WEATHERMAN TOLD ME PERSONALLY THERE WAS NO CHANCE OF RAIN THAT DAY.WE TOOK ALL PRECAUTIONS....BUT THERE IS ALWAYS THE UNEXPECTED

Just so others will know without him having to explain again, Cordwood Guy does need to type in caps due to vision problems. He's not being rude...he's adapting well instead.

THANKS SHERYL!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I know if these flaws aren't corrected, I'll grouse about them for the next 20-30 years. We will have to find a solution with our builder, and the floor will be corrected. Am still hoping there's some way to patch or use a bonding agent over the crooked scores and do it correctly. It will need to be sanded and restained as they used an ughly orange stain over the original brown which was very attractive.
