Pig Pasture

I am getting 2 pigs in the spring. I would like to plant some type of pasture for them to cut down on the feed expenses. What do you suggest? I live in No. Ca. zone 7

Oats are one choice. They come up quick and are cheap. You can use the regular "horse oats" they sell at the feed store. In Spring, till the soil, spread the seed with a hand seeder then rake in and water. Turn the pigs in when the oats are 6-8" high and watch them feast!

I have a very old book that shows pigs in fields of alfalfa, and also on clover.

My pigs used to love buckwheat that I cut for them by the armful.. It will also grow anywhere, even in poor soil. Just work the ground, throw the seed around and rake to cover. (After danger of frost. Will continue to reseed itself all season. Good luck--Tomas

Harmony farms, www.harmonyfarms.com [I think]. Carrys a blended pasture mix which would be better then just one typ as If the grass gets a desease you dont lose your whole pasture.

When pigs are pastured, different types of plants are planted for the stage the pig is in. If you'd like a site from someone who only pastures pigs, does not confine them, drop me a note. And they'd be happy to answer any of your questions.

Rogo, I'd be interested in seeing that site as well. Thanks.
