can i play vcd's in a normal cd drive?

Depends on what exactly you mean by "normal cd drive". If you mean an audio CD player, no. If you mean a standard computer CD-ROM drive, yes. Windows Media Player does understand MPEG-1 format and you should in theory be able to simply load the video file from the MPEGAV directory on the VCD and play it. I have heard from a few people who had really messed up computers that wouldn't play MPEG-1 video, but this is rather unusual.
