Cutting wood for fire wood

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I live in Michigan and have recently had somewhere between 60 and 80 hardwood trees uprooted or snapped off by high winds or tornados. I don't burn wood for heat and it is not feasible to install a wood burner at this time. I would like to start clearing the downed trees and stack the wood to sell after it dries. What length is popular with people who might purchase hard wood for burning? what is the measurement of a face cord and what is the best method of stacking so it will dry properly? I probably won't be able to sell much for a couple years as there are so many trees down in this area and most property owners can't give the wood away.

Haul it Indianapolis. Hardwood there is selling about $75 to $85 a rick. The wood around here is cut about 14 to 18 inches long.

Michael 4'X4'X8'=1 CORD 128CUBIC FT if you are not going to be able to sell this for a couple of years cut into approx 18"to22" lengths and split all the large logs once if still to large to handle twice sometimes alot more if this is a large hard wood tree anyway a piece of wood for the stove of ideal size hmm how about a triangular shaped log about7" tall. stack this into cord lots do not worry so much as the seasoning of the wood a couple of years shall do great cut and split like that. and the hard wood was? You could also just let people come and cut their own woods. Of course I guess there would be a liablity/insurance to think about too. We make ours about 18" in length for our wood stoves. Good Luck !!

2' is the maximum to fit in my wood stove, but on large diameter logs shorter lengths are easier to manage.

Hey Michael! Slow down! I'll buy it from you, I live northeast of Battle Creek and am even willing to come get it. You can e-mail me directly with your phone number.

Thanks neighbor!

You might try calling some wood cutting companies. If it is mostly hardwood, they may be able to harvest some of those trees. I did that with a 50/50 split and made over $2000 and did none of the work.

Kinda wish that storm hit here , we have to go cut wood on Sunday ! Yuck ! Some will also buy it in log lengths then cut and split it themselfs.

I think the more technical answer is a face cord is 16"x 4'high x 8'long and a full cord cut into 16"lengths would be 4'high x 24'long. They start out as 8' "sticks" then cut into six 16" lengths.

Quarter in 18in long pc's wrapped 6 to a bundle. That sells for $5.99 at the grocery stores here, and at resort areas that I have been to.

sorry you lost your trees definetly agood idea to have a logger check out your trees for logs before you cut up a sizaeable chunk of money.after they get the log out you can still cut up the tops for firewood .no waste.
